About the Author
Paul Elsner, Ed.D., (Senior Editor) received his doctorate from Stanford University and completed study at the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University. He is the Senior Editor of this Global Survey publication and the 2008 Edition. He serves on the Board of Directors for Sias International University in Zhengzhou, PRC, and has spoken and consulted in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Singapore, China, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Ireland, England, South Africa, and other countries. Elsner gave the Third Robert Atwell Distinguished lecture, following the first given by Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, and the second by Harvard President Neal Rudenstein. His previous appointments include ETS Board Chair at Princeton and the ACT Board at Iowa City. He also served as President of the Board for the League for Innovation and numerous Washington-based educational organizations and served as Chancellor of the Maricopa Community Colleges for 23 years. He is currently Founding Chair and Organizer of the Sias International Water and Global Warming Conference.

About the Author
Dr. Roger Baran received his Ph.D. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and his B.B.A. (cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame. His dissertation was awarded first prize by the American Marketing Association in the North America competition. He is a fellow of the National Opinion Research Center, has served on the U.S. Department of Commerce Census Advisory Committee of the American Marketing Association, and was Chair of the Bank Marketing Association National Research and Planning Council. He currently serves as Executive Vice-President of the Asian Forum on Business Education. Dr. Baran joined DePaul University after serving as Director of Marketing Research at Continental Bank of Chicago. For seven years he served as DePaul's Director of Asian and Middle East Graduate Programs, managing its M.B.A. programs in Hong Kong and Bahrain. His teaching and publishing specialties are marketing research, global marketing management, marketing of services, marketing management and customer relationship management. Dr. Baran co-authored the first textbook on CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT (Thomson Southwestern 2008). His book, PRACTICAL BANK MARKETING RESEARCH, was the first book published by the Bank Marketing Association dealing exclusively with this topic. He has published in numerous marketing, banking and international journals. Dr. Baran has served as a consultant in the area of marketing strategy and marketing research for many well-known companies in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Middle East.

Robert Galka has 25 years of experience in business development, strategic planning, relationship marketing strategy, general management, information systems and direct marketing. His career started in Computer Science in 1977, where he progressed from an applications programmer to a leadership position in computer systems design and implementation for marketing technology based solutions. He then leveraged his technical and marketing expertise assisting organizations in their Customer Relationship Management (CRM) efforts across six vertical markets since 1989. He held a position as a General Manager leading a business unit in supplying CRM solutions to Fortune 100 organizations just before accepting a full-time position as an Executive-In-Residence in the Department of Marketing at De Paul University in July of 2002.

Daniel P. Strunk has 34 years of experience in sales, marketing management, relationship marketing and consulting. In 1988 he developed the innovative Quaker Direct program which was consumer packaged goods industry's first real foray into relationship marketing. As President of Glendinning he developed technologically innovative relationship marketing programs for clients such as NBC Television Stations Group, Sara Lee, R.R. Donnelly, Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company and ConAgra Foods. Some nice examples but a little bit rudimentary

Was expecting more for a CRM book geared towards marketing graduate students. Some nice examples but a little bit rudimentary. I did enjoy the renting process from Amazon. Saved a ton of money by having this on my iPad.

Nuggets of Great Information

I work in database marketing and my focus is on Customer Acquisition and Retention. Baran and Galka's text on CRM has been a good source of inspiration on CRM tactics and on understanding implementation of CRM technology and culture in a company.

Top 3 Benefits of this book:
1.) A thorough discussion of CRM - It reminds me of "Successful Direct Marketing Methods" by Stone and Jacobs, lots of detail and puts the concept into a broader picture of the business.
2.) A good amount of examples - Baran and Galka pull from many interviews and their own personal experiences in this book. It solidifies the concepts when you can picture what CRM is doing.
3.) B2B and B2C CRM - Fortunately the book covers both worlds of marketing. The authors take stride to call out when some concept should be tweaked for businesses or if consumer marketing could benefit from a B2B concept.

Top 3 Issues
1.) Verbose - It's an academic textbook. It's a lot more wordy than it needs to be.
2.) Not a technical guide to CRM models - There is discussion on RFM, LTV and even decision trees but unless you research elsewhere, you won't find out more about how to actually DO the analysis. I would liked to have seen an appendix on how to DO the statistical concepts that Baran and Galka call out.
3.) Layout of CRM Measurements and Tools chapter - Chapter 12 has pages upon pages of measurements you can use in CRM but limited discussion on each one. Marketing Metrics by Farris, Bendle, et al. has a great structure for explaining these concepts in detail.

Overall, I learned a lot from 3 / 4 of the chapters in the book. Some of the charts and measurement tools have actually had an impact on my work and I've been able to introduce a handful of CRM concepts to my manager(s). I would absolutely recommend this for anyone in marketing that deals with numbers and is looking to find ways of squeezing more out of what you've already got.

Decent Primer on CRM

This textbook was required for a graduate-level course I took in CRM. The course and the instructor were terrible, but the book was the saving grace. I've only read one other book on customer relationship management (not a textbook), so I didn't have a lot to compare it to. Neverless, I found a lot of valuable information here. The book is very easy-to-read, though it's sometimes redundant and could use a little streamlining. One of the things that I appreciated was that the book focuses more on the processes of CRM, rather than just the technology. The other thing I really appreciate is the practicality of the book: a great deal of the information is actionable in the real-world. I'd recommend the book for anyone just getting started in any customer-facing or customer-analysis role; I'd also recommend it for anyone considering the implementation of a new CRM technology system.

About the Author
Timothy G. Stout lived in Japan for 20 years and has taught Japanese language for 23 years in public and private schools, and at the university level. While teaching at the American School in Japan he conducted research on the use of keyword mnemonics in the instruction of Japanese. Stout has a Doctorate in Education (EdD) from Utah State University, an M.A. in Japanese Pedagogy from Columbia University and a B.A. in Japanese Teaching from Brigham Young University. He currently teaches Japanese at Utah Valley University, and resides in Lehi, Utah with his wife and five children. Stout is the author of Japanese Hiragana and Katakana for Beginners and Let's Learn Japanese, both available from Tuttle.

BEST BOOK EVER

I have been self teaching myself and my children for 2 years now and have not found a book to help us until now. This is the best book ever! It has pictures and practice squares. It is perfect in every way except that I would love a copy that is more in a workbook (spiral bound?) form instead of a reading paperback. Thank you! I have been using it with the Kana flashcard set by Tuttle cause each time we learn a series of phonetics, we have a few words to correspond. We have been learning for 1 month and can read, write, and say over a hundred words in Japanese without aid. Yay!

Learning What Important

If you are learning Japanese, this is the book to pick up. Nothing is more important then learning the basics first. And this book gives you everything basic you can hold in your hand. In the beginning of the book, it gives you a back story of the man who invented TUTTLE. As soon as I stumbled upon the Tuttle Collection, it has been a blessing. And so far, learning Japanese has been a blast!
After reviewing the man behind the name in a paragraph or two. It gives you information on how to use the book, vowel pronunciations and even the past of the character sets themselves. Don't worry, it doesn't overload you with textbook definitions. It gives you brief and to the point back story's. Trust me, none of it is a waste of your time. All of it is useful and interesting information.
The Hiragana Chart is then introduced and you learn how to write them. This is important. If you are going to write in Japanese , you need to know the stroke order and stroke types. It keeps it neat and legible. When I first started using it I immediately wanted to buy another one. So I suggest, buy two or copy the pages so you can keep practicing off paper. The book provides wonderful practice as well as memorable mnemonics and vocabulary. When you're done with learning how to write them, there's an activity section. Where you are putting what you learned into use. It helps you remember the characters as well as their stroke order. Then when you're done with Hiragana, the exercise begins again with Katakana.
Though I would not recommend this to someone to learn Katakana and Hiragana straight out. But if it is what you want to try, go for it. I would offer this book to someone to learn how to write them and make their memory of the characters concrete.
If you want to use something to help you learn them, there are many resources on your Nintendo DS (I DON'T recommend Japanese Coach). And there are many free options on your Android Phone like JA Sensei, Kana Mind, Qwiz-Hiragana and more. You won't know until you start looking. The more fun it becomes for you, the easier it will become to learn.
The CD has a large number of names in katakana so you can look up your name in japanese. It even has flash cards with the same mnemonics images that are in the book.
This is a great tool, get it while its still cheap and they don't realize what they're selling.

A solid book with good instruction

This is a good book for the intermediate artist. He has a very good flow to his presentation and is easy understand with lots of pictures. He even gives the colors he uses so you can reproduce his work. There are parts of the book that I would have liked more explanation but I am sure that is the publishers fault. Pick it up you won't be disappointed.

A friend of ours gave us this book, and we would read a chapter at night before we went to bed during a difficult time in our lives. Corrie Ten Boom was an amazing woman and this book emanates faith and trust in our Heavenly Father. Occasionally I wake up at night worrying about the details of work or missionary life, and her words come back to me, "Worry is fighting tomorrow's battles with today's strength...worry is a sin. first you have to repent of the sin and then you have to put your trust in God." Or she'll start a story with, "Once when I was in solitary confinement in the Nazi concentration camp..." and you just have to smile at the small things that are giving you trouble and say to yourself, "I'm am not in her situation. I can do this."

This book literally changed my life. I first read it when I was a teenager after I was left orphaned at the age of 14. The book encouraged me to put into practice what the Bible preaches. I did, and can testify that the Word of God really works. I no longer have the original book, so I came to Amazon to purchase a copy. It was such a joy to once more see the familiar cover of Corrie with a sweet child nestled next to her. I often give the book as a gift to friends who are going through a rough time. Every single recipient has said the book helped them immensely. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
