common sense from an uncommon source

The Tao is an embodiment of practical age old experiance and sage common sense. I personally used the lessons contained in this book to build a ten million dollar company. A common misconception is business is about products, when business is more about people, and their needs, desires, and fears. If money is your only goal, perhaps this book is not for you. However, if you feel the challenge of managment is an opportunity to broaden your life experiance the Tao of Managment can help you realize your goals with insights very relevant today. The Tao is about working with the natural potential we all have, but sometimes forget during the normal everyday grind. You will be surprised how definitive it is in handling the most common problems you will face on a day to day basis.

"Tao means god, tao cannot be defined." well, which one is it! The book lacked direction and focus, although certain anecdotes taught minor lessons. There are better books out there.

This book started me on the Orthodox Pathway

I read this about four months ago and am still thinking about what it says. As a Protestant it is very enlightening as to our mindset, we are mostly empircal deconstructionists. We have an enlightenment world view and we can't stop deconstructioning. Its our history. We came out of Roman Catholic ( the Western Church was compltely pragmatic by then) and threw everything out but the Bible. Now some of us are throwing that out too. Its the natural course of events.

We tend to live emperically. By that I mean that the physical world that we interact with by our physical senses is primary at least and for some of us the only reality we ever experience this side of physical death. Beside the obivious cultural differences, in that important way Orthodoxy opens up a new world, at least it did for me. Do all of us think that way? Maybe not, but in my experience it is the majority report.

Thank you Father Freeman for reminding us that He is here with us and He is not silent. Best of all, even in our fallen state of sin we can still in some way experience His presence, we are after all, made in His image. 5 Stars

Change your way of thinking on where God dwells

Fr. Freeman is a blogger, like me, and a podcaster. His blog and podcast series share the same name, "Glory to God," and from my knowledge of listening and transcribing a few of his podcasts for Ancient Faith Radio, they share the same content as well. You should give one or both a chance.They do not disappoint in timely content as it relates to Orthodoxy and the current culture.

"Everywhere Present" is a short book, which discusses how our secular society has relegated God to a separate realm of His own. The book compares our view of the world to a house with two stories. On the "first story" is where man lives. God used to live on the first floor with us, but man has banished Him to the upstairs. Now, we ignore Him because we see Him as inaccessible, or, even worse, we question His existence altogether. Sadly, these viewpoints don't just belong to non-Christians but "Christians" as well.

There are several good sections in this book, including one on icons. I have a great love for iconography, so Fr. Freeman's explanations of the place and importance of icons in our world spoke to me. Icons truly do with pictures what the Bible does with words. However, the best section came at the end when Fr. Freeman gave seven suggestions on how to "overcome the false sense of distance of God." The most important of the seven is simply giving thanks to God for everything. This isn't easy as there are lots of bad things that happen to us and others, but we must still be thankful to God for everything.

This book definitely does not disappoint. It challenged my view of the world and God in the world. Even though, I believe in God, I fear I can be guilty of not recognizing God's ever-presence in all things. The book was an easy and quick read, but anytime I think that, I believe that I need to re-read the book slower and try to glean more from it. If I had one gripe to make, it would be that you feel that Fr. Freeman repeats himself a bit in his writing. For that reason, I am giving this book 4 stars. However, I would still recommend buying it, reading it, and reading it again.

There are multiple stories here (pun intended)

This is one of my favorite books of recent years. I have purchased and given away a number of copies to people I think would appreciate it. It fits, for me, with C.S. Lewis' "Abolition of Man" (although much easier to read) and other books describing how our contemporary world has lost its sense of personhood in relationship and replaced it with individuality and narcissism. (It is very interesting to read this book side-by-side with "The Screwtape Letters").

This book can be read at an intellectual level, considering the insights into our culture's contemporary worldview, and what it has cost us. On that level, it points out clearly where breaks have occured, and what they look like. This is how I read the book the first time, getting the major points, not always understanding the details. I did find it quite enlightening to read how popular Christianity is, in many ways, functionally athiestic. It helped me understand how Christians can believe in Christ and still behave the way we do sometimes.

Having heard Fr. Stephen's podcasts on Ancient Faith Radio, I knew there had to be more to his book, so I read it a second time. This time I began to start thinking about what my life would be like if I really believed and acted like the universe had one storey - if God really WAS everywhere present. What would it be like if what we call miracles are an everyday occurance? What if I saw God everywhere? What if I really acted like God could be seen in the faces of the people around me? What would my life be like? How would I behave? A new storey opened up in the book, so to speak. The monks of Mar Saba live in a world most of us can't see - I suspect a world much more fully real than ours. What would I have to change to be more fully real (more fully present?) myself?

Here is where the book really becomes powerful. The seemingly redundant or obscure points need to be explored. They need to be chewed on. They need to be wrestled with. Most of all, they need to be taken seriously. This book can challenge your assumptions about reality. It can change your life. I have a friend who says, "watch out for short books, they'll get you." This is one of those books.

Disclaimer: I am an Orthodox Christian. This book is written by an Orthodox priest and is written from that perspective. Sometimes it may seem alien. It might be.

A HEART IS THE SIGN/SYMBOL FOR "GOLD" both on written, coded and drawn maps as well as TRAILMARKERS AND MONUMENTS. The origin of this symbols meaning did not come from the Bible, as most did. This meaning came from an old Spanish adage: "A SPANIARD'S SOUL MAY YEARN FOR GOD, BUT HIS HEART FOREVER YEARNS FOR GOLD." This relationship of heart and gold was reinforced in symbolism by the historians who wrote about Cortez' response to Montezuma when Montezuma asked Cortez the question: "-WHY DO YOU SO MUCH DESIRE GOLD?" and Cortez answered "-BECAUSE WE SPANIARDS HAVE A DISEASE OF THE HEART WHICH CAN BE CURED ONLY BY GOLD." - So look more than twice when you see a heart carved on a large rock in the desert or on a mountain side, if it was made by the spanish there is a gold mine or golden treasure nearby. The King of Spain ORDERED all treasure/mine trails to be monumented according to Spain's drawings of markers/monuments. The Palace of Governors in Mexico City and Santa Fe (New Mexico) INSTRUCTED the exploration groups, haciendas, mining/explorers etc. in the basics of both monument meanings and map codes.

Both Mexico City and Santa Fe regulated and enforced the King's rule, received the King's 15% to 20% fee from the haciendas/miners etc., required the trail monuments to be built so that if they wanted to "inspect/check" the operations without notice, they could easily find and follow the monumented trail into desolate mountainous terrain. Also, if all miners were to meet with some great disaster, the King of Spain could again locate and re-establish the mine - or retrieve the hidden treasure by following the monumented trail.

Therefore, the trail markers to and from were required as well as treasure/mine maps. Note: All treasure/mine maps symbols/signs etc. were also identical in use and meaning throughout this New World. Also, a standard or special list of "measurements were used on treasure/mine maps because Spain could not operate with hundreds of different codes, measurement and different monument/marker meanings when they were dealing with so many mines in the New World.

If we think about it for a minute, it becomes very clear that Spain was extremely wise in requiring "special and specific" codes, measurements, markers and monuments on treasure trails and maps in the New World. Spain had literally thousands of mines (gold, silver, emeralds, amethysts, mercury, etc.) in Mexico, Columbia, Cuba, The United States, Peru, Guatemala etc. with many of them in desolate, distant and dangerous areas of the world. With such a number of mines they could not afford to have separate or different meanings in codes, symbols, maps and treasure/mine trail markers and monuments. Therefore, for example, even though each province/state in Spain did have a different "vara length" and the length of a league may have changed three (3) times in 300 years, but TREASURE TRAIL MONUMENTS, CODES AND MEASUREMENTS NEVER CHANGED.

The kings of Spain required "road signs" monuments and trailmarkers to be constructed about every 1,200 feet both to and from the treasure/mine. Spot just any one of these while fishing, hunting, hiking or treasure seeking and follow the trail--to a prize bigger than the lottery.

This book has over 100 actual photos of classic Spanish markers & monuments (in the field) as well as their meanings and instructions.

Excellent works

My copies of the Kenworthy books have become so tattered and dog-eared I think of them as necessary as a high-lift jack and a five-gallon can of extra gasoline on a search. Great books for searchers. I consider the Spanish Signs and Markers the best and most useful of the two.

good, but cannot recommend it.

This is a really good book. I will say that. However, I cannot in good conscience suggest it. Why? Because in the time since its been out, the author has written numerous other books, starting another for (possibly as many as six) series'. It leads me to believe she loves to start new ones, but not finish them. That being the case, this author has lost my interest. Now, if you don't mind getting a book that is good, but an incomplete story, then by all means, purchase it. BUT I thought it only fair to say something, as I had been avidly watching the new releases of Me. Phoenix.
For those offended that I would post this.. all I can say is that it's honest and straight forward which is supposed to be the purpose of a review.

Yum!!! HUGE Sons of Judgment fan!

I just finished reading this book, overall I think it took me about 10 hours from "cover" to "cover". Why? Because it was AWESOME!!!

Octavian is a Caster, a judge of sorts for Creatures of the Veil. One of the 3 rules passed down from Heaven is to never touch a human. Then in walks Riley and oops, he couldn't keep his hands off her. They are drawn to each other like a moth to a flame, they can't seem to stay away and fall for each other quickly. Everything is stacked against them it seems and just when something gets worked out, another HUGE kink in their plans and lives happen. Both of them are willing to risk anything, except each other, to save the lives of the other. In the background, there's a war brewing between Demons and Angels and it seems the two of them are caught right in the middle, along with Octavian's family and anyone else they love.

I loved this story. I couldn't believe the twists and turns it had and would be almost gasping for air as I read about their fight for survival. I was shocked beyond words when learning of "what" Octavian and his family are. I did NOT see that surprise coming. I loved the humor and the wit throughout the book. I was laughing so much through this book at the one liners and sarcastic remarks. And the romance, while there was some sexy parts, they weren't too horrible that someone who didn't want to read them, couldn't skip over them. I just have to say that the parts I read were pretty tastefully done and steamy.

My favorite parts of the book? Octavian's banter with his brothers. The twins absolutely cracked me up to no end. I loved the way his parents treated each other...with reverence and love. Daphne was a very welcomed surprise. I couldn't quit figure out her story, hadn't guessed it, until it was revealed, but I thoroughly enjoyed her part in the story. Honestly though, I can't remember a "favorite part" because I enjoyed the entire book and would end up quoting it in its entirety. Ugh, now to wait for book 2!!!

Wow. Just wow. First of all, the beginning of this book showed such promise - I was so excited for this story to unfold. Then, a quarter of the way through the book (which was about 200 pages, this is the longest book ever) the spelling and grammatical errors began - at one point there was one page where I counted 7 errors! It made it so difficult to read. In addition to that, the story itself did not connect, I felt like there was a lot of setting up for this grand reveal and then it was over and anticlimactic. And don't even get me started on when Octavian and Riley FINALLY sleep together (90% through) - worst scene ever. I only finished this book because I wasted so much time reading the rest of it!! I skipped through a lot because it was so repetitive - not reading the second one!

Never talk about robot technology before you read this play

Capek created the word "robot" with his brother resulting the play "R.U.R.". Capek foresaw the world of 21st century and gave a warning so much ahead of time. This is one book everyone should read before they talk about robot technology and its benefit. T.K.OHSKA

While these plays by Karel Capek were written decades ago, they are still timely and are still being produced to this day. I was fortunate enough to have seen "Vec Makropulos" live in Prague Theater and it was widely enjoyed by the audience. Many of Capek's works question our existence and even though he uses insects as characters, they are not science fiction in the usual way of aliens come to earth, but more as a way of questioning why we are here and what is to become of the human race. Capek coined the word "robot" to serve as machines that morph into beings that begin to take over their human creators.

E. A. Preobrazhensky (1886-1937) was a leading Bolshevik, the most prominent Soviet economist of the 1920s, and co-author of The ABCs of Communism. A prominent early member of Leon Trotsky's Left Opposition in its early stages, Preobrazhensky was executed by Stalin in 1937.

Richard B. Day Ph. D. (1970), University of London, is Professor of Political Economy at the University of Toronto, Canada. He has published extensively on Soviet economic and political history, including Leon Trotsky and the Politics of Economic Isolation (Cambridge, 1973), and , with Daniel Gaido, Witnesses to Permanent Revolution (Haymarket 2011).
