Excellent Book, A Must have.

This is one of the better books that I read on languages and machines. This book is great for someone who is interested in parsing, compilers or pattern matching. The book covers a lot of theory on computation and is not for a beginner. I would recommend that one be well grounded in set theory, recursion and mathematical induction before attempting to read this book. I did not read all the chapters; I only read those that were relevant to my project and I had not seen before in other texts. The 1st chapter get you upto speed with a good review of set theory followed by a quick review of induction and recursion. The 2nd chapter gives an excellent introduction to strings, languages and regular expressions along with relations on regular expressions. Chapter 3 is where the rubber hits the road. It covers context-free and regular grammars. I feel this chapter covers the subjects very well. Chapter 4 gives a good description of parsing and methods of parsing. Chapter 6 covers Finite Automata. This chapter describes deterministic finite state machines, nondeterministic finite state matchines and nondeterministic finite state matchines with lambda transitions. The presentation of the subject in this chapter was excellent. Chapter 7 presents Regular Languages and Sets. This chapter gives a good presentation of how to put together different types of machines from different languages and build languages from machines. I found it best not to read the chapters in orders, instead I read them in the following order which helped to understand the material better; 1,2,6,7,3,4,11,12
My only complaint: It would have helped if the author could have gave answers to some of the problems at the end of the chapters.

A Good Book for a Tough Subject

Abstract language theory is hard, but Languages and Machines does a very good job of explaining the subject step by step. The topics are covered extremely thoroughly and with just the right amount of rigor. As for those who claim it's not exciting enough, you can't get blood out of a stone. Only the most dedicated computer scientist and mathematicians will find this topic interesting. Even so, this book does a superb job of tying theory to application (e.g., the machines one can use language theory to build) for even the most obscure concepts (like the Greibach Normal Form).

That being said, there are a few problems. First, the author's claim that this is a book for undergrads is not credible (except perhaps at MIT or CalTech). Even my graduate students have to read sections multiple times to "get it". Second, the author needs to provide solutions to selected problems at the back of the textbook. Most theory books do this, but not this one. This is a major weakness, especially given the difficulty of the material. Lastly, Sudkamp's proofs are extremely dry and very difficult to follow. He should take a cue from Sipser's "Intro to the Theory of Computation" book (which I do not recommend as it is generally too abstract for most students) and introduce "proof ideas" to give the big picture for important proofs.

Hey,

I was fortunate enough to learn this course from the author of the book. The book by itself might seem tough. The fault lies in the fact that subject matter is not altogether too simple to understand without someone teaching it to you!

With the help of the instructor, we did learn a lot about formal languages, finite automaton, regular grammer, etc.

The key to understanding this material (and using this book effectively) is solving as many problems as possible, preferably in a group setting so that solutions can be discussed.

Note: For most problems, there exists multiple solutions, and the approach is what needs to be learned and discussed.

Recommended, with some reservations...Good luck!

An Integrated Guide to Creating Short Stories

When I first saw this book in a Berkeley bookstore, I almost didn't pick it up because of its subtitle: A Step-by-Step Guide to Writing Short Fiction. Sounded too formulaic. In retrospect, I'm glad I stood there to read the author's preface and introduction.

"What This Book Is ... and What It's Not: Memorable short stories aren't written by the numbers. That might seem a strange thing to say in the introduction to a book that lays out a step-by-stop plan for the writing of a short story. But it's important to say at the outset that the interlocking series of exercises Shaping the Story contains isn't meant to provide a guaranteed formula for use in writing fiction. That would be a foolish, as well as an impossible thing to try: stories are endlessly various in the ways they emerge, develop structurally and find their way to an ending. That's part of the joy of writing them, and of reading them."

Why interlinking exercises? The author notes the limitation of exercise-based books and classes: they lead to "disarticulated stack of sketches and little notion of how to employ newfound skills in writing a complete story." The limitation of workshop-based classes: they "too often seem to teach story writing in much the same way an autopsy teaches the investigator the cause of death--the procedure may be instructive, but the subject lies dismembered on the table, never to be resurrected."

SHAPING THE STORY overcomes these limitations with his innovative approach of "linked, progressive exercises that help students to conceive, develop, and revise a complete short story."

Moreover, in each chapter, the author shows the reader his comments on two students' responses to the progressive, interlinked exercises. In the final chapter, on revision, he comments on the revised draft of the two completed stories. Highly instructive comments.

The book includes a brief anthology of 13 short stories from writers such as Jorge Luis Borges, Wallace Stegner, Flannery O' Connor, Tobias Wolff, Louise Erdrich, and Sandra Cisneros. Each story is followed by six questions that focus on the techniques deployed by the writer.

It's an excellent book for beginning fiction writers. Minor suggestion: A more accurate subtitle would be: An Integrated Guide to Creating Short Stories.

Solid and engrossing

Face it - there are hundreds of how-to-write-anything books. So why read Shaping The Story? Because it's the equivalent of a seasoned pro walking you through the genesis and development of a single story - Baechtel leads you by the hand (unobtrusively), leavening the instruction with student examples, and well-known and lesser-know stories by wonderful short story writers. I particularly liked the interplay between the author's comments and the students. You can tell that these techniques have been 'road tested' in the classroom. Excellent for the serious beginning writer, with plenty for more experienced writers.

It will change your life... but do you want this new life?

The Good: For Seduction

I will first express the positive aspects of this book, read below to find out my criticisms and the danger of following these rules. Let me first start of by saying that this book does provide tons of useful information to understand the dating world, females, and males; and how they all interact together. It begins with the philosophy and biology of males and females, which adequately explains a lot of the perceptions that people hold about what "attracts" someone to another person. This is all good information. It then explains the three "traits" that women find attractive in men:

1) Confidence: confidence is the "appearance" of being confident and decisive. The author explains that you do not need to actually "be" confident, but you must appear so through your outward appearance (movements, speech, actions, etc.) Since a woman is unable to actually read your mind, you are able to express exactly the appearance you want if you aware of your actions.

2) Responsibility: responsibility includes being a leader, dominant, and essentially doing what you, the man, wants to do. This borders somewhat on concepts of confidence.

3) Charm: charm is the ability to make others, in particular women, feel good about themselves and comfortable around you. This is done through the way you talk to them, your body language, and the topics of discussion.

Now the author explains that each of these skills will assist in building attraction in a woman. I do not disagree. Matter of fact, I intentionally adopted (over a few weeks of practice) these traits and before I knew it, I had an attractive girl chasing after "me" and begging to date me. My past history: I have never dated anyone seriously, and was afraid of interacting with girls. In a short amount of time, I had girl who asked me to be her boyfriend - which I did accept. Everything sounds fine, the book produced the results it promised with the ideas it presented... or did it? Read on to hear how my story ends.

The Bad: For Long Term Relationships

The book will most likely allow you to produce attraction in nearly any girl. But what this book does NOT focus on is actually keeping a relationship, or anything more than a hookup for that matter. The book contains a sections labeled as "The Relationship," which ironically is encompassed within 6 pages out of 300 page book. It states that you should not consider any girl worth a long term relationship until you had taken her to bed. Classy. Obviously the author is not interested in actually producing a real relationship with a women that contains anything other than sex and seduction.

For those of you who are interested in a long term relationship, this is not your book. I followed these techniques to obtain an attractive woman, but eventually found myself feeling empty and manipulative since I was not truly acting how I wanted to. Would you want to keep up the facade of being perfect by constantly employing techniques a book has bestowed on you for the rest of your relationship (or even marriage!?)? The Manual may allow you to produce attraction in females, but is that really all you want? If you seek to actually share your life with someone which the two of you can mutually understand and bond, using this books "techniques" will not get you far.

Back the end of my tale. After having dated this girl for the first month, she was completely enthralled in me. However, I was not happy with me. I was constantly monitoring myself to ensure I followed these rules - which led to my discomfort and feelings of manipulation and not being real. What I really wanted was a girlfriend, not just a sexual partner. So I consciously decided to take some of the ideas of the book such as confidence and being decisive and use them while eliminating the fear of being who "I" actually am. Over the next few weeks I saw a decline in her sexual interest as well as interest in me. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. But either way I became more satisfied with me, while slowly losing her.

Conclusion:

Do these techniques/ideas work? Yes, I believe they do.
Should you buy The Manual and use them? Depends on what you are looking for.
1) Do you want to seduce and pickup women? Go ahead and buy this book.
2) Do you want to find a long term relationship? I would be hesitant to suggest this book.

This book doesn't teach you to be real with yourself or with your woman of interest. It encourages deception, which ultimately will lead to an unsatisfactory relationship in the long run. It is your choice, I presented my experiences with this book. Good luck.

What Women Want? Well..

Those who have seen the movie 'The Tourist' starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, probably remember the train scene where the two meet for the first time.
Depp plays a seemingly very apologetic man (Frank) and Jolie a very attractive and elegant woman (Elise) and she has her reasons to make contact with Frank. She spots him as she walks through the railcar, sits down right across him and looks him straight in his eyes as he quickly closes his book and stops smoking

Frank: I'm sorry
Elise: What for?
An awkward silence follows and Frank laughs uncomfortably
Frank: Mind me smoking? It's not a real sigarette blablabla (explanatory nonsense)
Elise: That's somewhat disappointing
Frank: Would you rather have me smoking for real?
Elise: I would rather you'd be a man who did exactly as he pleased...... I'm Elise
Frank: I'm Frank
(the conversation continues until Elise suggests something
Elise: Ask me to dinner frank
Frank: What? .... Okay...Would you like to have dinner?
Elise: Women don't like questions.
Frank: Join me for dinner
Elise: Too demanding
Frank: Join me for dinner?
Elise: Another question
Frank: ....I'm having dinner, if you'd care to join me

Even though most hollywood movies dramatically misrepresent what women want in men, this scene brilliantly paints what women truly desire in men. And reading this book directly reminded me of this scene. If you want to become the type of man that Jolie describes in this scene, than this book will show you how to become that exact man. No gimmicks, no tricks, no scripts, no bs, only what's truly necessary to understand. What women want is not that complicated, you just have to be presented the right information.

I've become very successful with women myself through some critical self improvement, but I still like to read books like these from time to time. And this book has instantly become part of my top three books I'd recommend to any man looking to improve his dating life (the other two being How to Become an Alpha Male: Attract Women and Become Successful at Seduction and Models: A Comprehensive Guide to Attracting Women)

In this day and age so much dating advice equals a lot of clutter to go through just to get some useful information that will truly help. I've absorbed about all I could get my hands on. From pickup advice to advice by self proclaimed naturals to advice by female dating coaches, I've even taken two live courses by two different dating companies. So take it from a guy who knows what he is talking about. If there is a book that you should read, if you want the answer to what women want, if you want to learn how to be a real man that women can appreciate, then this is the book for you.

As for those writing skeptical reviews about this book without actually having read it and to those who are in doubt about the credibility of this book, I didn't get paid for this, I've also reviewed another book on here some time ago and I'm being honest with you when I tell you that you'll truly get your moneys worth out of this one.

Big ups to W. Anton for putting in the time and effort to create this masterpiece.

Alright, I had to laugh at the guy claiming that this book sucked. I personally loved the book. No, it wasn't a "hold your hand and give you the cookie cutter outline" of how to meet and communicate with women. What it was, was simple. The book delves into the mindset of a man, vs a male.

The most important thing I took away from this book was that I need to stop being a "nice guy". I have been too nice. I am a man. I had better start acting like it. All of my girlfriends and my getting married came from how I was putting myself forward in a confident way. I didn't do any of it consciously.
After my wife leaving me with our five children, I chose to make the effort to figure out what in the hell had happened and why.
I learned from my studies that I wasn't the man that she had married. I recognize this now. I wasn't happy in the marriage anyway, so go figure.
The point is that I realized from reading this book that what had gotten me the girls up to that point and since was the confidence that I exuded.

Mr. Anton has done is create a manual about how you should be yourself and not try and be someone else. Don't be a pickup artist. Be a man that gets women. It is as simple as that.
I finished the book,(Yes, every page, all the way through) and have already been getting smiles and looks of appreciation from women that are younger and more attractive than any woman I have ever dated, even when I got married at 23 (I am now 39).

I highly recommend this book if you are wanting to be more of a Man and learn how to be yourself and confidently attract and communicate with beautiful women.

Useful Book, Hate the Class

The book sums up everything. The chapters are easily written into notes because they aren't that long and the book isn't that big. The class sucked because the book explains things about the different mediums of business communication very well, but my class took it's own liberties on explanation.

Gripping read

As much as I love YA literature, this is not a book that I would usually read. However, once I started reading it, I could not put it down. While it's been a while since I have read it, the storyline has stayed with me and was brought back into the forefront of my mind when I heard of the tragic events at the elementary school in Newtown Connecticut. While I am not going to diminish the event by comparing and contrasting fiction vs. real-life, I am going to say that the heroism of the two main characters in trying to save those kids is truly amazing and humbling and echoes the real-life heroic efforts of many of the school staff. Moreover, the insight into the killer's troubled mind is well-done and creates a complex character that explains the events that led up to this event. While this may be a little too soon for many to read a book like this, readers will truly find this a compelling and well-written book and well worth the read.

This Is Not A Drill

My Thoughts: This Is Not A Drill was a pretty intense novel. It deals with a very serious subject and is very emotional.

We are introduced to Emery and Jake who had a rough breakup. Jake made some mistakes and Emery hasn't forgiven him, and she plans on not forgiving him.

They are paired together to teach students at a elementary school. Just had to be karma that they get put together and have to work together as partners.

One day while at the elementary school, one of the children's dad Brian comes in demanding to take his son out. The teacher encourages him to sit down and talk this out, but he refuses to listen. Brian has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from serving in Iraq and he is always on high alert to his surroundings. He takes the kids hostage and won't let anyone go. Brian has gotten himself in quite the ordeal and he doesn't know how to stop it or change things.

Gosh, this book was pretty frustrating for me. I liked it, but I felt like I was reliving the story over and over again because we are basically just getting to know him and what he went through. It was hard to stay focused because I just wanted him to let everyone go.

I get it, I do. He just wanted to take his child home and be able too. His wife had been having problems with him and was wanting a divorce. Brian is going through a lot after coming back. But I can understand why he can't take poor Patrick with him.

I loved seeing things from Jake and Emery's point of view. This Is Not A Drill switched back and forth so we could see things from each side. We could get into the characters heads and know what they were thinking. I also liked seeing all the different sides of the children. Each one was so unique.

The ending, ouch. Can't help but want things to end differently.

I liked this novel, I did. I just didn't like it as much as I had hoped.

Overall: Probably more of a 3.5 cupcake novel for me. I did like it a bit more than a 3 but not quite as much as a 4. It's always hard to rate these kind of books. This Is Not A Drill is an interesting look at how this could all go down. And I was so proud of both Emery and Jake for being so brave.

Decent thriller

Beck McDowell doesn't shy away from big subjects in her debut. In THIS IS NOT A DRILL, an armed veteran comes to an elementary classroom looking to take his kid out of school early. The completely awesome teacher tells him he needs to follow procedure and refuses to just let Brian Sutton take his son away - leading to Sutton taking the class hostage.

THIS IS NOT A DRILL is told through the alternating points of view of Emery and Jake, high school seniors who tutor the class part time. They've very clearly got a past - Emery dislikes working with Jake and is mad at him for some reason. The exact details unfold as the two work together to protect the kids. Jake, I would say, has a more dynamic character arc than Emery, but both are fairly stock characters. But THIS IS NOT A DRILL isn't about their character growth, so it doesn't matter that they're pretty thinly drawn. It's a thriller with a decent-sized helping of political commentary.

McDowell puts little kids in danger, which both ups and lessens the tension. It's scarier because no one wants little kids to get hurt and the kids are terrible at behaving and not angering the upset gunman. They need to go to the bathroom, they can't sit for too long, they get into fights. They're kids. But it's less scary because I never felt that McDowell would actually transgress convention and kill one of the kids. Only the older characters felt like they were in danger. (McDowell also gives the death count at the beginning, which definitely makes it seem like the kids will be fine.)

As for Sutton, he's suffering from PTSD and clearly didn't integrate well into civilian life after his tour and Iraq. His wife definitely has grounds to divorce him and go for full custody, and he definitely overreacts, but McDowell still makes a decent point. Soldiers not getting the psychological support they need after spending time fighting a war is a real problem. At the same time, the message of THIS IS NOT A DRILL is delivered in such a ham-fisted manner that I literally cringed while reading.

THIS IS NOT A DRILL is a surprisingly quick and easy read, given that it's about a school shooting. There are some really clever moments, as the teacher, Emery, and Jake try to get help without Sutton noticing and hurting someone. And I did hope than none of them would be included in the final body count, no matter how unlikely that seemed. But what could have been a taut thriller went off the rails every time it started to harp on PTSD and the government's responsibility to soldiers. It's even a point I agree with, but it just kept killing momentum instead of being folded into the action. THIS IS NOT A DRILL is an okay read, but ends up being more forgettable than hard hitting.

You don't have to be a nurse to enjoy this book

This book is funny, sad, frightening, and at times unbelievable. As a nurse (and I also read it the first time while in nursing school) I know that every story in this book is absolutely true. I think anyone wanting an inside look into hospitals will find this enjoyable and informative. It proves that in medicine, truth is much stranger--and far more interesting--than fiction. Of the many authors whose books I have enjoyed, Echo Heron is the one I would most like to meet. From the intimate look she gives us into her life, it is easy to tell that this is a bright, funny, and incredibly caring woman.

I read this book while in nursing school, and I just loved it. I am out of school now, and I see the things that Echo describes in her book on a daily basis. Just great! I recommend it to everyone, not just nurses!

Action-packed supernatural horror, Executioner-style

William Massa's haunted hit-man Frank Talon is really coming into his own with this third adventure. The former Delta operative has finally acknowledged the presence of objectively demonic evil, but his modus operandi is still to eliminate with extreme prejudice those who choose to ally themselves with dark forces. This time out Talon is tasked with rescuing a formerly possessed damsel in distress from becoming re-possessed, this time seven-fold. There's a nearly endless supply of nameless, faceless bad guys to take out, but one thing I love about this series is that the hero doesn't just charge in with guns blazing. He makes plans, has contingency plans, knows when to request backup, and when he pulls the trigger, it's just one more step in a process. There are scenes of stealth, an extended chase scene, and a siege on a remote desert monastery. Another strong point in this (hopefully) ongoing series is how Talon wrestles with his own demons, even when taking down the minions of others. His primary ally is resourceful as always, and three new characters could certainly show up again in later installments. Occult Assassin has all the elements of a Mack Bolan/Executioner action/adventure, but with a supernatural/horror twist. Can't wait for the next one!

Just finished Apocalypse Soldier...WOW! (An Occult-Action-Packed-Thrill-A-Minute-Suspense-Thriller!)
This is the best one yet! And That's saying something... [See My Reviews on the Other Books]
Starts out with a 1, 2 Punch with the first 2 chapters AND Never lets up!
A Great Ending and a Helluva Journey In Between...

Because each book is self-contained but yet Pieces do overlap or overflow between the books!

William Massa does it again.

Occult Assassin: Apocalypse Soldier is the newest novel in the adventures of Mark Talon, ex Delta Force soldier now on a path of vengeance. The tale of Talon, to this point, has been a twisted one, filled with occult (sometimes supernatural) villians to eliminate at every turn. Marc lost his fiance violently at the hands of a satanic cult and he has made it his mission to take out evil where ever it rears it's head.
In Apocalypse Soldier, the reader finds Talon hot on the trail of a woman sought after by a satanic cult. A cult whose endgame is to start the Apocalypse. Only by saving her, can Talon save the world from the end times.
Massa really does a great job of entertaining the reader. Talon is akin to an occult hunting James Bond. (I think the Daniel Craig Bond.) He is more action than finesse, but that is why you love this character. His duty, his self proclaimed mission, is to exterminate and does he ever leave a pile of bodies in his wake.
This fast paced novel gets the reader involved and you better hold on tight because it's a bumpy ride.
What I love about the Occult Assassin series is you can jump in anywhere and have a solid understanding of what's going on without having to read the books in a specific order. It's pure entertainment!!
