Did not live up to its potential

I read the first book even though it was only rated 3 stars, and it was compelling enough that I bought the rest. The Silenti were a fascinating race and I wanted to know more about who they were and where they came from, all they were capable of, etc etc. Never did find out.

The pros:
For once, a teen heroine that did not fall in love every time you turned around!! There was no "insta-luv", no frisson of attraction, none of that mess. That was refreshing. Also, no sex scenes, cursing was PG rated, and some relationship situations were almost believable.

Dialog was pretty good, nothing strained or forced for the most part.

Primary characters were three-dimensional. They had faults and strengths, nobody was perfect, there was no knight in shining armor and for once the heroine was not "the only one who can save us all". Secondary characters were less developed but still were pretty well-rounded for secondary characters.

I read all three books - maybe it didn't keep me on the edge of my seat but I was compelled to find out what happened at the end. Which leads us to the CONS.

The cons:
First, what genre is this? Sci-fi? Paranormal? Mystery? Surely not romance. It was kind of "Lifetime Movie" with no romance and a little mind-reading thrown in. If not for the mysterious Silenti (again who are they really?), it would be an average slice-of-life, nothing-ever-goes-right drama.

The writing was pretty passionless. There were some potentially very emotional moments that were treated as footnotes, did not move me at all. I mean, people DIED along the way and I felt NOTHING. The tension and suspense was just not there. Even the reunions, when they happened, were rushed and pretty emotionless. It was a little like watching a documentary or reading a history book. Interesting but passionless.

Very unsatisfactory ending. So many questions unanswered, what happened to the people left behind (I mean clearly the main characters know but would it kill them to share that info with the reader?) For a short story, maybe I could live with it, but I had THREE BOOKS and STILL DON'T KNOW WHERE THE SILENTI CAME FROM. Are they extra-terrestrial? Supernatural? Parallel universe? I will never know.

And although there was no "insta-luv" between Lena and anyone, which was great, one would expect some feeling by the end of book 3. Nope. No even a crush, although there is a lot of "I miss him". They are living together but are they living together as a married couple? Is there any chance of an heir and a spare? Again, WE WILL NEVER KNOW.

And finally, the epilogue: This may be the end of the world as we know it. THE END. So abrupt and lacking in suspense and tension.

I think this could have been awesome, like suspense movie awesome, but it would get right to the edge of suspense and pull back. It just never really got there.

Compelling and Satisfying End to the Trilogy

As ever, I was hooked from page one, unable to put the book down until I reached the conclusion. Tyler created such a complex web of characters and stories I had no idea how she would wrap them into a concluding novel, but she managed it with style and panache. This final volume feels complete and fulfilling, without answering all the readers questions and leaving space for additional stories in the future.

My Review:

I really have to give Luedke credit for how creative he's gotten with his writing. The sheer expanse and detail has been absolutely fantastic, what's better are the cameo's we get.

Its brilliance to bring in favorites into new installments because we already have a cast and author that we love and now we get a new complex world with that added bonus.

I can't even sum up the size of genre cross and mix of players because Luedke opens a box of characters that keep you guessing and investing from beginning to end.

I wish I could put into words just how much I'm loving the start of this series and honestly wish it had been longer because -gr... cliffhanger/hangover. I want more.

The whole can you trust the unknown and jump without the assurance of a safety net into the relationships both in friendships and intimate involvements pays off in a big way.

You don't have to pick up the previous books to understand involvements because Luedke makes it easy for new readers to his books to find their way but I would totally recommend you do because his works are fantastic to fall in love with.

Truly Epic!!

I love this story!! To sum this story up, it’s about an average, virgin young woman, named Ashley, who has a bond with a mysterious God. He’s been with her, in her mind, promising the keys to the universe, if she just commits to him. And as she does commit her mind, body, and soul to this God, she’s on a journey to get him here, on earth. There are forces where Mithra's from that do not want him to get to our world. They want it for themselves & will do anything to prevent this from happening. (My favorite scene, was when Mithra deflowered Ashley, hehe. Actually pretty tamed by Travis’ standards. However, I did enjoy that.) She makes a handful of friends along the way. *Squee* This is where the author’s The Nightlife Series comes into play. We meet Urvashi, the Fallen Angel, who became attracted to the surge of energy/power Ashley now has. So in order to find the gate, she’ll need all the help she can get. A fallen Angel, two badass vampires, and a nerd on the ultimate quest to find the answers of the alien question. Sounds exciting, right? Oh, it is!! If this is your first time delving into the words of Mr. Luedke, you’ll find yourself wanting to know more about these ‘side’ characters, Aaron, Michelle, and Urvashi. I know when I met Urvashi in The Nightlife Series, I was constantly wondering what Urvashi is, why she’s here, and where she came from. She really is an intriguing character, and I may just get my answers yet. The flow and writing is flawless as ever. You’re hooked from the beginning and as always, Mr. Luedke leaves you wanting more. He’s the Master of that. I really, really enjoyed reading this new story. The meshing of the worlds, On Point. I was taken on a journey with these characters and now I’m invested. That ending!! Oh my gosh!! Like Ashley and Aaron, I’m going to need to breathe!! Lol. So much left unfinished, unsaid, undone...I need that next book...NOW!!

Super interesting blend of mythology and sci-fi, with a little romance thrown in for good measure.

In Upon This Rock, author Travis Luedke delivers an exciting tale centering around different universes and the many mythological creatures that inhabit them.

Mithra, a god, has been searching for a key to the universe that's been locked away for millennia. Ashley is your average young woman -- normal, on her own and just trying to get by. Ashley is also a wallflower, doing her best to blend in and be as unnoticed as possible. When she starts dreaming of a man so otherworldly, he couldn't possibly real, she chalks it up to just that -- dreams. In these dreams, the man keeps promising her the key to the universe, if she just lets him in. It isn't until an event occurs that Ashley starts to realize that this may not be simply dreams after all, that something bigger is at play and certainly something she doesn't understand. This both brings relief and a lot of trepidation. Ashley has a history with her mom seeing "demons" and she fears she may face the same fate given to her mom. Being that Ashley is also a rational human being, she's starting to understand that perhaps her mom wasn't crazy after all. After meeting a very interesting (and scary powerful), woman, Ashley is taken on a fast-paced adventure that shows her the world as she knows it isn't really as normal as she thought.

Typical of high-fantasy novels more so than UF/PNR, Luedke's world-building introduces many elements and technology without pausing for an explanation. This is both helpful and confusing. Helpful, because the narrative never slows for the overused and tiresome "info dumps"; confusing, because it's left to the reader to figure it out. Travis completely avoids the confusing part by cleverly inserting links that take the reader directly to the glossary, thereby keeping the narrative seamless and never losing pace. Although to clarify any misconceptions I may have caused by my explanation above -- this isn't high-fantasy, the author's world-building just mirrors that of high-fantasy with the unexplained terminology and various settings.

Upon This Rock also incorporates characters from one of Travis' other series, which I haven't read. Rest assured, I wasn't lost in not "knowing" previously introduced characters, but I do know that I now want to read that series to see the characters from the beginning, especially Urvashi. She's an interesting one and her background is...different, to say the least.

I love the movie with Chester Morris and it was interesting to read the book. It gets a bit to religious, but it's well written. More of a long short story or novella, not really a novel.

Good basics, but better choices for the experienced

artridges of the World, authored by Frank C. Barnes and edited by Stan Skinner, is always a fun read and generally a good reference book, however, I believe the franchise publishers may be getting a little impatient in releases. The 11th edition was released only 10 months after the 10th edition, while the 10th edition was released almost 3 years after the 9th edition and with more appropriate timing based on new cartridge releases. In short, there wasn't much new included that shouldn't have easily made the 10th edition.

In general, I noticed no particular attempt by the author to update or correct entries that appeared in earlier editions. The 357 SIG is still listed as a new cartridge , with the suggestion that time will tell if it will succeed. The 357 SIG is chambered in almost every performance non 1911 autoloader and in heavy use with Federal agencies including air marshals and the FBI. The 376 Steyr carries an association with the Scout rifle which has not been available in that chamber for years. The Remington SAUM line and the WSM line read like a new introductions. There are some showcase articles on sub .22 caliber rifle cartridges and the Chinese standardization on the 5.8 caliber, although I am hard pressed to know why as the information is of little practical use and of interest to a very limited audience. I would have been happier with a review of the concepts behind the past few years of cartridge releases and the prospects for the future.

Some of the categorizing or editing has gotten a little sloppy and there is a decent amount of redundancy in listings. Virtually every cartridge that appears under the military heading and has found its way into sporting rifle use, is also listed under "Current American Rifle Cartridges; the 7x57mm Mauser, 8x57mm Mauser, 30-06 Springfield, 7.72 NATO, etc. Usually this dilemma of listing is handled with the least appropriate heading get an "See under x Category". Things got a little more foggy with the inclusion of the 303 British under "Current American Rifle Cartridges" with text describing it as the "official British military cartridge until the adoption of the 7.62 NATO" then goes on to indicate it has never been popular in the United States. I am not sure what the term "Current" means as the definition offered by the book makes no sense at all. According to COTW, current cartridges include those where ammunition is still available, even if only by special order, and only if chambered in modern guns, although not necessarily in guns manufactured and sold in the U.S. I guess this also explains the 8mm Remington Magnum and 375 Winchester being listed as current. Under the "Obsolete American Rifle Cartridge Category" you'll find the 405 Winchester, even though ammo and a current rifle is produced, and the 358 Norma Magnum which is not an American cartridge. The 38 Casull is listed as a mainstream handgun cartridge, as is the 32 North American, the latter cartridge I am only aware of being available in the North American Arms Guardian pistol. The 440 Cor-Bon, however, is listed as a proprietary cartridge, as is the 475 Linebaugh, the latter which is chambered in a number of firearms and available outside of the originator as brass and loaded ammo. Proprietary typically means supplied by the manufacturer for use only in their firearms. Based on some of the COTW definitions, the 257 Roberts would be a proprietary cartridge rather than a commercialized wildcat. Where rifle cartridges have the designations "current" and "obsolete", handgun cartridges carry the page heading "handgun cartridges of the world and there is an in page break heading "obsolete" in the middle of the listings - something easy to miss and also inaccurate. As an example, I shoot a Russian Nagant 7.62 revolver with some routine. The cartridge is listed as obsolete, rather than military and I buy newly manufacturers Fiocchi ammo routinely from suppliers.

That said, if I didn't have an earlier edition of Cartridges of the World I would buy a copy of the current release. If I had the 10th edition, I am not so sure. It is a good general reference book and there are few that offer the same. It is just not a book of great detail and sometimes with uneven listing.

Standard Reference Work, though not perfect

If there is one standard handbook for cartridge collectors as well as for "everyday" users, this one should be named foremost. It covers a very large range of current and obsolete cartridge both from the metric and the "imperial" (read: British and American) measurement systems, civilian and military alike. A number of the better-known wildcat and proprietary cartridges are also treated. Almost all cartridges are illustrated (though mostly not with measurements, which are confined to some cumbersome tables at the end of the chapters). While this book is not "the bible" and still contains many (often just minor) errors and inaccuracies, it is infinitely useful, and the well-known new editor, M.L. McPherson, has already made improvements over the previous (7th) edition. I strongly recommend this book as a "must buy" for even a very small firearms reference library - you will end up using it daily.

A great resource for any shooter!

This is a wonderful book to just sit and read for pleasure as well as being a great reference resource. The history of each cartridge is discussed, as well as the author's personal thoughts on each cartridge. The author is a clear, concise writer without being dull, and the range of cartridges covered is very complete. I have used it often. I am currently reading Peter Hathaway Capstick's book, "Death in the Long Grass", which tells of his African hunting experiences. Capstick mentions several dangerous game cartridges, such as the .375 H&H Magnum and the .470 Nitro Express. I looked both up in this book and read about their histories. One very cool thing about the book is that each cartridge is pictured actual size. These big game cartridges are as big as cigars and go about 300 to 400 grain in weight (compared to one of my favorite cartridges, 30-30 win, which is usually about 150 grain). Included in the book are obsolete cartridges and those fascinating wildcat cartridges, such as the author's own creation, called the "thermos bottle" which must be seen to be believed. If firearm cartridges interest you for any reason you should have this book.

About the Author
Martin R. Phillips is an extremely passionate historian, archaeologist, and most recently a writer. Ever since Martin was a young boy he has been fascinated with ancient cultures and civilizations. In 1990, Martin graduated with distinction from the University of Cambridge with a double major in History and Archaeology. Upon graduation, Martin worked as an archeologist and travelled the world working in various excavation sites. Over the years, while working as an archaeologist, Martin became very well cultured and gained great insights into some of the most historic civilizations to ever exist. This first hand insight into the ancient cultures of the world is what sparked Martin's newest passion, history writing and story telling. In 2012, Martin decided to retire from archeology to focus on writing. Over the years he has seen and experienced a great deal of fascinating things from all over world. Martin now spends the majority of his free time putting all of his research, experience, and thoughts onto paper in an attempt to share his knowledge of the ancient cultures with the world. Over the past few years Martin has excelled in his writings. His narrative style has a way of combining the cold hard facts with a story teller's intrigue which makes for an excellent reading experience. Three Interesting Stories in one book!

Greek Mythology will always have a special part in my heart. I love reading about the Gods and Goddesses. Even in my teens I find topic really interesting. I must say I love Martin Philips' books. I've dowloaded his other greek mythology book and I have to say this one is superb because it contains three stories, the Greek Mythology, the Egyptian Mythology and lastly the Norse Mythology. This book is full of interesting and knowledgable information. You should never miss this book simply because one of the most interesting aspects of Ancient Greeks is their mythology. As for the mythology of the Ancient Egyptians, it is without a doubt, one of the most enduring and fascinating sets of mythos that the worlds has ever seen. And Lastly the Norse Mythology or the Norse Religion or, as they referred to it, Tradition. I'm sure most of us hasn't heard about this. This book is the best way to start and gain knowledge about it.

I really love to know history. I found this book very interesting.I book helped me to know about four different ancient culture.The book is about secrets of Greeks,Egyptians,Vikings and Norse.The writing was interesting and fun to learn about this culture.This book provides a nice foundation to get started in your quest to increase your knowledge of Greek mythology and its myths.A great research done by the author.I was surprised when I go through this book.I would recommend this book to history lover.

Refreshed My Knowledge on Ancient Mythology

This is a great and fascinating guide to have for anyone who wants to find out more or is new to Greek, Egyptian or Norse Mythology. I'm a first year Mediterranean archaeology student and especially the part on Greek Mythology has been very useful to read because it provides a brief but complete overview on these ancient legends. All of us have heard some of these stories while growing up. I had forgotten about many of them so it was great to refresh my knowledge again with this introduction to three compelling cultures, and to expand my knowledge.
This book saved me time and still provided me with the necessary information, so I think it's also perfect for people who find mythology intriguing but don't want to or don't have the time to go through enormous amounts of text, which if often the case with books concerning history. Recommended!

About the Author
Anthony T Selvaggio is a teaching elder in the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America and a member of the Rochester Reformed Presbyterian Church (Rochester, NY) where he contributes regularly to the preaching ministry. He previously served as the Senior Pastor of the College Hill Reformed Presbyterian Church (RPCNA) in Beaver Falls, PA. He is also a visiting professor at the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA. He is an active preacher and conference speaker. He lives in Rochester, New York with his wife, Michelle, and his two children, Katherine and James.

Great Little Book

Anthony T. Selvaggio's book, The Seven Signs, is a small book, but within the 116 pages you will find more meaning than in most books. Selvaggio examines the seven signs found in the first half of the Gospel of John. Selvaggio's purpose in writing this book is the very same reason the Apostle John wrote his Gospel nearly 2000 years ago - he wants the readers to know that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing (they might) have life in His name" (John 20:31). A major component of Jesus' ministry on earth was the performance of signs and wonders. The book consists of nine chapters and four to nine study questions at the end of each chapter. It is a great little book for individual or group studies. It should be noted that the author teaches at a Reformed church and a Reformed seminary, and the publishers distribute books in the Reformed tradition.

The Seven Signs is a nice summarizing of the first half of the Gospel of John. It would be a great tool to use to show someone the attributes and power of Jesus in a concise way.
