No Drama Teacher should be without this book!

Drama Structures is an excellent tool that I believe all teachers of Dramatic Arts should be familiar with. This book provides a teacher not only with a flexible manual of how to approach many different issues or topics, but it also equips teachers with the knowledge of how to develop the units further.
Drama Structures is divided up into 4 easy to read sections. Part One focuses on "Drama in Schools: What is Drama?" It Includes information on Drama and the curriculum, the Drama Teacher, and modes of activity. It outlines the reasons we do what we do in the classroom, the type of work that we do, and how to implement creative ideas in our own classrooms.
Part Two puts the Drama Structures into practice using four fully developed lesson plans. The structures are all based on historical and/ or information packed topics and issues that include "The Way West," "Leaving Home," "The Lost Valley," and "The Victorians." These units are designed so that a teacher can develop as little or as much of the structure as they wish, thereby deepening the learning and meaning for all involved participants. Each of these structures include an introduction to the topic and a list of resources for the teacher to investigate. The structures use many of the drama conventions to enhance different types of learners in the classroom: Whole group activities, small group activities, pair work, and individual work. Upon completion of all the exercises found in a structure, the student will have a solid understanding of the chosen topic they are investigating.
Part Three describes issues in "Teaching Drama." This section is directed toward the teacher and offers discussion on planning, using theatre elements, working in role, questioning, discussion and reflection, evaluations and assessment, and other practical considerations.
Part Four is entitled "Structures for Development." This section is subdivided further into three subsections; "Drama as enquiry." This section focuses on why certain people behave as they do; "Small Group Work." This can be used as a good basis on how to get a drama started or to shape new ideas of the topic; "Drama across the curriculum." This section illuminates particular areas of the curriculum and describes how to introduce drama approaches to an inexperienced class.
A lesson commentary is given for each structure found in this book. Furthermore, additional notes and comments are found with every activity presented to the teacher. This book allows for each teacher to individually tailor to the needs of their own classrooms as the structures are extremely adaptable. No dramatic arts teacher should be without the knowledge of this book.

I grew up in Philly but have lived around the world and enjoyed every minute of it. In writing One Step Ahead, I wanted to give everyone a chance to travel to some of my favorite places via Madison and Becker's adventures. The great joy of travel is not just the scenery, but the people themselves (and the food!). I hope you'll enjoy this fun love story as you journey with Madison and Becker through the trip of a lifetime.

Only read it if it's free

From the desciption this looked like a fun read. It wasn't. The premise is Maddy is blindsided by her husband Becker who wants a divorce because he doesn't feel any passion in their marriage and is interested in a co-worker. He tells her this while eating a meal. This on the first night of their dream vacation in Europe. Maddy now spends most of the book traveling and eating on her own. Along the way she is befriended by complete strangers - usually over a meal. Did I say the book includes many descriptions of the wonderful meals the h eats. Way too many descriptions of meals. There is minimal character development. But there is always another description of another meal the h eats. The h and H are supposed to be transformed by their experience. I just don't see it from the writing. The dialogue was minimal. The interaction between the characters was paper thin. The only reason this one got two stars because there were little to no grammatical error. I can't say I would recommend this unless it is free.

Travel is food and sites and senses

A fun read, perfect preparation for anyone who will be traveling soon
and who will enjoy vicariously immersing themselves in the worldwide
locales before they get on a plane. The people and the food are great
ways to really savor a foreign location. And the adventures that
Maddie and Becker experience as Maddie stays "One Step Ahead" keep you
turning the page."

Travel journal

This book is basically a travel journal chronicling the experiences of an estranged couple making their way through Europe and Asia. At the start of their trip, Maddie is dumped by her husband Becker who wants out of their stale marriage. Instead of wallowing in misery and hurt, Maddie decides to proceed with the trip alone. She ends up meeting people and doing fun things she would not have done had she been with her husband. Becker, on the other hand, does not have a good time on his own and quickly realizes that he has made a huge mistake. He spends the rest of the trip trying to win back his wife.

Despite the interesting premise, the writing is not very compelling. As other reviewers note, there is too much description of food and too little character development. The author mostly tells rather than shows how Maddie and Becker are feeling. Even with a somewhat suspenseful scene late in the book, I could not muster much emotion reading this story.

About the Author
Forrest Carr observed his 20th year in the news business in January 2000. He joined KGUN9-TV, the ABC affiliate in Tucson, Arizona, as news director in September of 1997. During his tenure KGUN9 has made waves locally and nationally with its innovations in viewer service and community-responsive journalism. KGUN9 solicited viewer input for a statement of principles, the only television station in the United States ever to have done that, and it appointed one of only three viewer ombudsmen in the country. Carr began his career as a radio reporter but quickly switched to television, serving at various times as a copy writer, reporter, newscast producer, managing editor, and assistant news director in the Memphis, San Antonio and Tampa markets before going to Tucson as news director. Carr has contributed to numerous scholarly and trade publications, and has won or shared credit in four dozen professional awards, including a regional Emmy for investigative reporting. He is a graduate of the University of Memphis.

Dr. Suzanne Huffman is Associate Professor of Journalism and Broadcast Journalism Sequence Head At Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Her B.A. is from Texas Christian University. She earned her M.A. at the University of Iowa, and her Ph.D. at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Huffman has reported, anchored, and produced news at commercial television stations in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Santa Maria, California, and Tampa, Florida. She taught at three other universities before joining the TCU faculty, and her former students occupy newsroom positions at stations throughout the South and Southwest. Her research centers on the practice of broadcast journalism. It includes television station and newsroom workplace issues, such as the current proliferation of live reporting, the use of mission statements, coverage of women's sports, the history of broadcast journalism in Texas, and broadcast news writing practices and style. Her research has been presented at both regional and national symposia and has been published in numerous scholarly journals.

Dr. C. A. Tuggle began teaching on the university level in 1994 after a 16-year broadcasting career in local television news and media relations. He spent the majority of his career at WFLA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Tampa. He has held numerous newsroom positions, but spent the bulk of his career reporting and producing. He covered both news and sports, including six Super Bowls. Tuggle earned his undergraduate and masters degrees from the University of Florida in Gainesville, and his Ph.D. at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He is currently teaching electronic communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research has appeared in nearly a dozen scholarly journals and trade publications, and centers on television news practices and procedures. He regularly conducts writing workshops for local stations, professional and academic groups, and high school journalists. He has overseen student newscasts at three universities and helped develop more than 50 interns during his professional career.
