I ought to write a book titled Why Dr. Ruckman's books are a waste of time!

I am not a Seventh Day Adventist, but 15 years ago I took a long look at early and modern Seventh Day Adventism. Dr. Ruckman describes at many points of this book a staw man he calls Seventh Day Adventism, and then attacks the straw man. His attacks are based upon his view of what true Christianity is, although Dr. Ruckman is onsidered on the fringe the brand of Christianity he represents. The same goes for every books in his series. I'm not saying one should not read Dr. Ruckman's books ... its good to read different points of view. However, one should then look at what other pro-, anti-, and neutral writers have to say about the Seventh Day Adventists before jumping to any conclusions. Some folks will say "yep, I studied Seventh Day Adventism and they are a cult!" but when pressed further, one learns that these people read one anti-SDA book by their favorite writer and nothing else. All I have to say about that approach is, "What would Jesus do?". Rely on one witness with an ax to grind? Or look at least at pro and con writings and compare them with the Scriptures? I really think Jesus Christ would do the later, don't you?

Use consistent logic

I'm a Seventh day Adventist. I wasn't raised one. I spent many years searching . I became SdA after reading a similar book. I than discovered a SdA book written in response. The SdA writer used the Bible in a manner that let the scriptures interpreted itself.. It also made the writer of the anti SdA book seem foolish for taking their positions. I hope any one reading Dr Rickman's book will check out the SdA positions on these doctrines.

I think he hit just about every logical falacy we currently recognize

My family was SDA, my step-dad was SDA, which meant that from the age of 8 to about 18, I was SDA. I was baptized in the church when I was ten, and from fifth grade through junior high, I attended an SDA school. My freshman year of high school was spent at Campion Academy in Loveland Colorado. As a child, I took it seriously.

I loved Ellen White. I was jealous of her because she got to talk to god directly... I read her books, and I often had debates with the adults in my life... and I did quite well. I could argue Ellen White better than the adults around me.
Later, I left the church and moved on. I joined the Assembly of God denomination, and when that got too extreme, the Foursquare denomination. When I discovered that they, too, were lying to me, I joined a Religious Science church (now called the Centers for Spiritual Living).

Well, I'm done with the god thing and I've continued moving on so anything anyone could say about the SDA Church would not offend me...

That being said, what is Dr. Ruckman's purpose? Is he trying to have a logical debate about the SDA church? If he is, then he's pretty much debated every logical fallacy known. He attacks those who disagree with him using Ad Hominem. He sets up a straw man argument and proceeds to argue from there (I know this because I am familiar with SDA doctrine). He uses only anecdotal evidence, and of course there's the obvious fall-back of all religious fallacies... the appeal to authority. He's verbally abusive, and ultimately downright belligerent.

If he's really trying to simply alienate everyone around him, he's doing a great job. If Jesus or Paul used his oratorical strategy, we wouldn't even be discussing Christianity at all. Jesus' and Paul's followers would have abandoned the teachings altogether. I read about as much as I could take before I wanted to bang my head against the wall.

The good "doctor" (and you would think a doctor would know how to structure a debate) is really just a child; an immature pre-teen adolescent; and his arguments are childish. "You're a big old poopy-head because you don't believe the way I do..." "I hate you... and god hates you too!"

Am I also using Ad Hominem? Absolutely. I need to trust that the person I'm using to gather my education is... himself... educated. Those who can argue a point dispassionately can be trusted to give you the "truth" about their issue and provide a trustworthy and integrous message. And it's clear that this is not the case with this book.

So I would like to end with this message to "Dr." Ruckman: "I'm rubber, you're glue. Whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you."
Oh, and call me when you finally get out of junior high. While you're in Jr. High, though... consider taking some debating classes... You could clearly use them.

About the Author
Philippe Goddin was born in 1944. Hie is considered to be one of the top experts on Herge's life and oeuvre. he has been studying Herge's art for more than 30 years, and has published several books on the subject. He was lucky enough to know Herge and to be acquainted with many of his friends and colleagues. Most of the documents produced in this series come from the Studios Herge where Philippe Goddin directed the research and archives for more than 10 years.

Insight into the later years of the Master

[[VIDEOID:mo2GF8VEC6W8P9K]]In this final part of this three volume Treatise, we get to see the later part of Herge's work.

Continuing with the same format that has become standard for books that research Tintin, very similar to the size that the original Tinin albums came, including the numbering at the bottom with a little circle around, this book is a nice hard bound reference to keep.

Page after page of pictures that include copies of original pen and ink work, some with corrections in white, preliminary pencil sketches, color proofs, cover designs, and original print as it appeared in periodicals provide a treat to the eyes.

Covering the period 1950 to 1983, the author researches into the frame of mind Herge was during this period, and the creations that came out of him.

Destination Moon, Explorers on the Moon, The Calculus Affair, Red Sea Sharks, Tintin in Tibet, The Castafiore Emerald, Flight 714 and Tintin and the Picaros and the unfinished Alph Art were the books that came out of the Studios Herge staple during this interesting period.

The book tracks Herge chronologically as he goes about his intriguing life and his creation, through the unfolding of ideas, concept sketches, story and the final product.

A must have well rounded series for the Tintin/Herge fan, and of course for anyone interested in Tintin.

Interesting enough, but.....

This third part of the series, as the previous 2 is interesting enough. Just the amount of graphic material makes this a volume worth purchasing. However, the content is not nearly enough. Just little bits of information is offered on some of the albums and it seems like the whole series has summarized the original ones in French "Chronologie d'une oeuvre' . This results in some paragraphs seldom making any sense and a lot of interesting information missed.
Overall, I would strongly recommend purchasing the original series (7 volumes) in French. However, that is currently unavailable in the US

Exploring Creativity

The field of creativity is still in its infancy. However, much has been published on the topic over the last 50 years, including numerous books and articles by Synectics consultants. These writings include the 1970 book by Synectics co-founder George Prince, "The Practice of Creativity" considered by many a classic in the field.

Synectics enjoys a long history, one as rich and eclectic as the many new ideas our clients have developed in our sessions with them. Our history provides insights into the evolution of key business issues as well as the growing need for creative answers to those issues.

George Prince and William J.J. Gordon founded the firm in 1960. The two had been part of Arthur D. Little Inc.'s Invention Design Group, a consulting practice responsible for helping companies develop new product concepts. Puzzled by why some meetings were much more fertile than others, Gordon and Prince believed it had less to do with the people in the room and more to do with the dynamics that were operating unbeknownst to those people in the room.

To understand those dynamics, Prince and Gordon taped thousands of hours of new product development meetings. They studied how people were interacting. The tapes revealed significant differences in meetings that generated inventions and those that didn't. The founders then turned their observations into methods that replicated the techniques used informally by successful inventors and entrepreneurs.

Ever since, Synectics has advanced its approaches to helping people in organizations to generate superior ideas, with steadily increasing impact.

Synectics is based on a simple concept for problem solving and creative thinking - you need to generate ideas, and you need to evaluate ideas. Whilst this may be stating the obvious the methods used to perform these two tasks are extremely powerful.

Synectics is an approach to creative thinking that depends on understanding together that which is apparently different. Its main tool is analogy or metaphor. The approach, which is often used by groups, can also help students develop creative responses to problem solving, to retain new information, to assist in generating writing, and to explore social and disciplinary problems.

It helps users break existing minds sets and internalize abstract concepts. Synectics can be used with all ages and works well with those who withdraw from traditional methods. Teacher-facilitators can use synectics in the classroom by leading students to:

* Describe the Topic: The facilitator selects a word or topic then asks students to describe the topic, either in small group discussions or by individually writing a paragraph; e.g., MUSIC.

* Create Direct Analogies: The facilitator selects another word or topic then asks the students to generate a list that would have the same characteristics as those words or phases listed in Step 1 (a direct analogy is set up to make comparisons between the two words, images, or concepts). How are MUSIC and BIAS alike? Ask them to generate vivid mental images. Mental images are powerful tools in the process.

* Describe Personal Analogies: Have students select one of the direct analogies and create personal analogies. Students "become" the object they choose and then describe what it feels like to be that object. How would it feel to be music that is biased?

* Identify Compressed Conflicts: Ask the students to pair words from the list generated in Step 3 which seem to fight each other. Always have the students explain why they chose the words which conflict. Then have the students choose one by voting. How are auditory symbolism and personal inclination different?

* Create a New Direct Analogy: With the compressed conflict pair voted upon by the students, ask them to create a different direct analogy by selecting something that is described by the paired words. How are auditory symbolism and personal inclination like a painting, poem, movie, political party, etc.?

* Reexamine the Original Topic: Return to the original idea or problem so that the student may produce a product or description that utilizes the ideas generated in the process. They may concentrate on the final analogy or use analogies created in the other four steps

For the same thing just different try the following. For best results go through each step, then put it away for a while, then go through the next step. Don't look at any list until you get to the last step, redefine.

Use the dictionary to fully define the word(s).

Generate a list of words or topics that:

* are similar to the original word(s);

* describe what it would feel like to be the original word(s);

* are opposite to the original words(s);

* Once again, are similar to the original word(s).

* Look at each list and find words that help you redefine the

direction of your quest.

Examples of Analogies for Students:

There are three types of analogies commonly used with children:

1. Fantasy

Children think of fantastic, way-out and perhaps ideal solutions to a problem: these can lead to creative yet workable ideas, eg. What would be a really unusual way of moving a sleeping cow out of the adventure playground?

2. Direct analogy

Children think of parallel problem situations in real life, faced by people or nature. For example, the problem of moving the sleeping cow might be compared to how cranes carry heavy loads.

3. Personal analogy

This requires children to place themselves in the role of the problem itself &emdash; to be the sleeping cow or "the problem". For example .. 'Imagine you are the sleeping cow in the adventure playground. You want to move to another place where it's quieter, without losing any sleep. What would you do?'

Timeless

I love The Practice of Creativity! It was revolutionary when it was initially published in the 70s and its timeless advice is still recognized by great contemporary problem-solvers as one they will always remember. I was familiar with the subject of Synectics from a class on Group Management in college but I didn’t actually pick up the book until I saw it mentioned in Steve Krug’s Don’t Make Me Think guide for web site usability. Although it’s been a while since I read the book, I think it’s important that I put in my two cents because it’s deserving of more readers! The new 2012 edition is a nice paperback with a forward by Krug himself.

First of all, I think it is brilliant how author George M. Prince and his co-worker came up with the Synectics method of brainstorming. During their time working with engineers and inventors, they thought to record their meetings to see what the climate of the group discussion was, to look for room of improvement. Sure enough, they found several note-worthy things. One key discovery that directed the development of the Synectics method is the Itemized Response. Because people are incredibly sensitive, they designed these three simple steps to follow when facilitating a group meeting:

1) Assume that there is a good intent in every suggestion

2) Before you state your reasons why the suggested idea won’t work, you have to say two things that you like about it.

3) Then you can point out the parts that strike you as flawed or impossible.

It’s simple and intuitive, yet, incredibly beneficial to be intentional about! I guarantee that you too will notice that these three steps will foster a more relaxed, positive, and engaged environment that produces innovative ideas in your workplace, and beyond. I actually thought about these three steps the other day when my spouse and I were discussing our kitchen renovation since home improvement decisions can be hard to make!

does it really works?

I bought the book because it was in the bibliography of "don't make me think " by Krug. The book gives some interesting advices but my overall rating is "poor". It's creativity seen by a mass production engineer, it's like an art book written by a bank clerk.

And most of all the writing style it's incredibly boring (you know those documents starting with "list of the acronyms used in the document"?)

And please amazon fix this bug with "how do you rate this item?" loosing it's value when you go back to the "write your own review" pressing the edit button. I know I know, it's not the apropriate place, but have you ever tried to go through the contact section of this website?

An Underrated Legend

Herb Trimpe was one of those longtime comic book artists who never got the recognition they deserved when they were working. However with his passing in April of this year, Trimpe is finally getting his just due as one of the greats in the field during the 1970s and 1980s. This brand new book from the fantastic TwoMorrows Publishing explores the life of Trimpe along with his long and diverse career in comics.trimpe

The bulk of the book features a book length interview between Herb and writer Dewey Cassell. Trimpe was born in New York and served in Vietnam. It was there where he first discovered Marvel Comics in the mid-1960s. He took his work to Marvel where then Production Manager Sol Brodsky hired him immediately, assigning him to several of Marvel’s western comics. Trimpe discusses those early days, the famous Marvel Bullpen, and those legendary story sessions with Editor-in-Chief, Stan Lee.

Trimpe became best known for his long run on The Incredible Hulk which started in 1968 on issue #109. During the run Trimpe co-created characters like Doc Samson, and most famously…Wolverine! Trimpe talks about Stan popping his head into the bullpen one day and just asking, “Hey Trimpe. Do you want to draw The Incredible Hulk?” The interview section on The Hulk is the longest as Trimpe shares his many memories of working on the character and co-creating Wolverine along with writer Len Wein.

Trimpe was a mainstay at Marvel who worked on just about every title the company put out. He worked on a number of licenses properties at Marvel including The Shogun Warriors, G.I. Joe, Planet of the Apes, Indiana Jones, and Godzilla. The authors include sections on these various properties, highlighting Trimpe’s involvement. While Cassell handles the interview with Trimpe, his co-writer Aaron Sultan interviews a number of Trimpe’s contemporaries including John Romita, Joe Sinnott, Roy Thomas, John Buscema, and Herb’s son Alex.

Like so many older artists, Trimpe found himself being edged out of work by younger, more popular artists in the 1990s. He shares his thoughts on being let go by Marvel after 29 years, providing a diary-like narrative of the events which eventually led to his unceremonious firing via a letter from Fed-Ex in 1996. Never one to let life get him down, he relates how he found new meaning to his work by teaching art in high school and serving as a Chaplin at Ground Zero after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The book concludes with an amazing gallery of his artwork in both color and black and white which succinctly epitomizes his skill and ability to adapt as an artist. Although Herb never worked for DC, one of the pieces in the gallery is a commission piece of the Justice Society of America which is very cool. Finally there is an index to his credits not just at Marvel but for the other companies he worked for as well.

Trimpe passed away just as this book went to press and it serves as an informative and heartfelt tribute to a true professional.

Hulk like this hard-cover book. Hulk thinks Herb(rest in peace) was best Hulk artist ever. Herb was Hulk's best friend. Hulk don't like that book used cheap paper. Hulk like glossy shiny paper. This book not use glossy paper. Puny paper. Bah! : /

A tribute to a great comics storyteller

It's too bad Herb Trimpe couldn't see the love that poured out for him upon his passing. There was a lot of it. This book is a reflection of that love. Featuring a great in-depth interview with Trimpe, as well as interviews and and salutations by fellow creatives, this is a wonderful book. Did I mention the artwork. Even if you're not a fan of superheroes (and, interestingly enough, Trimpe wasn't) here is the work of journey man comic book creator who always his best and just got better with every job. Low voltage wiring

I purchased this book for tips and hints about installation and business protocols. It is very 'average' and would suit people 'new to the industry'. As I have 6 years industry experience, it did not provide me much information, but may be advantageous to 'new staff members and installers' to assist in their understanding of security systems.

Good Stuff

This is a good book. I like the fact that it goes into building/running the actual business aside for good tips on accomplishing jobs. It's interesting how the author stresses how much of a contract-based business this is, and how important it is to write good contracts. The seller also shipped very quickly and I didn't have to wait too long to get into it.
