A native of San Francisco, Peter B. Kyne was a prolific screenwriter and the author of the 1920 bestseller "Kindred of the Dust". His stories of Cappy Ricks and the Rick's Logging & Lumbering Company were serialized in "The Saturday Evening ""Post" and William Randolph Hearst's "Cosmopolitan" magazine. He died in 1957.

Interesting back story

I love the movie with Chester Morris and it was interesting to read the book. It gets a bit to religious, but it's well written. More of a long short story or novella, not really a novel.

Good basics, but better choices for the experienced

artridges of the World, authored by Frank C. Barnes and edited by Stan Skinner, is always a fun read and generally a good reference book, however, I believe the franchise publishers may be getting a little impatient in releases. The 11th edition was released only 10 months after the 10th edition, while the 10th edition was released almost 3 years after the 9th edition and with more appropriate timing based on new cartridge releases. In short, there wasn't much new included that shouldn't have easily made the 10th edition.

In general, I noticed no particular attempt by the author to update or correct entries that appeared in earlier editions. The 357 SIG is still listed as a new cartridge , with the suggestion that time will tell if it will succeed. The 357 SIG is chambered in almost every performance non 1911 autoloader and in heavy use with Federal agencies including air marshals and the FBI. The 376 Steyr carries an association with the Scout rifle which has not been available in that chamber for years. The Remington SAUM line and the WSM line read like a new introductions. There are some showcase articles on sub .22 caliber rifle cartridges and the Chinese standardization on the 5.8 caliber, although I am hard pressed to know why as the information is of little practical use and of interest to a very limited audience. I would have been happier with a review of the concepts behind the past few years of cartridge releases and the prospects for the future.

Some of the categorizing or editing has gotten a little sloppy and there is a decent amount of redundancy in listings. Virtually every cartridge that appears under the military heading and has found its way into sporting rifle use, is also listed under "Current American Rifle Cartridges; the 7x57mm Mauser, 8x57mm Mauser, 30-06 Springfield, 7.72 NATO, etc. Usually this dilemma of listing is handled with the least appropriate heading get an "See under x Category". Things got a little more foggy with the inclusion of the 303 British under "Current American Rifle Cartridges" with text describing it as the "official British military cartridge until the adoption of the 7.62 NATO" then goes on to indicate it has never been popular in the United States. I am not sure what the term "Current" means as the definition offered by the book makes no sense at all. According to COTW, current cartridges include those where ammunition is still available, even if only by special order, and only if chambered in modern guns, although not necessarily in guns manufactured and sold in the U.S. I guess this also explains the 8mm Remington Magnum and 375 Winchester being listed as current. Under the "Obsolete American Rifle Cartridge Category" you'll find the 405 Winchester, even though ammo and a current rifle is produced, and the 358 Norma Magnum which is not an American cartridge. The 38 Casull is listed as a mainstream handgun cartridge, as is the 32 North American, the latter cartridge I am only aware of being available in the North American Arms Guardian pistol. The 440 Cor-Bon, however, is listed as a proprietary cartridge, as is the 475 Linebaugh, the latter which is chambered in a number of firearms and available outside of the originator as brass and loaded ammo. Proprietary typically means supplied by the manufacturer for use only in their firearms. Based on some of the COTW definitions, the 257 Roberts would be a proprietary cartridge rather than a commercialized wildcat. Where rifle cartridges have the designations "current" and "obsolete", handgun cartridges carry the page heading "handgun cartridges of the world and there is an in page break heading "obsolete" in the middle of the listings - something easy to miss and also inaccurate. As an example, I shoot a Russian Nagant 7.62 revolver with some routine. The cartridge is listed as obsolete, rather than military and I buy newly manufacturers Fiocchi ammo routinely from suppliers.

That said, if I didn't have an earlier edition of Cartridges of the World I would buy a copy of the current release. If I had the 10th edition, I am not so sure. It is a good general reference book and there are few that offer the same. It is just not a book of great detail and sometimes with uneven listing.

Standard Reference Work, though not perfect

If there is one standard handbook for cartridge collectors as well as for "everyday" users, this one should be named foremost. It covers a very large range of current and obsolete cartridge both from the metric and the "imperial" (read: British and American) measurement systems, civilian and military alike. A number of the better-known wildcat and proprietary cartridges are also treated. Almost all cartridges are illustrated (though mostly not with measurements, which are confined to some cumbersome tables at the end of the chapters). While this book is not "the bible" and still contains many (often just minor) errors and inaccuracies, it is infinitely useful, and the well-known new editor, M.L. McPherson, has already made improvements over the previous (7th) edition. I strongly recommend this book as a "must buy" for even a very small firearms reference library - you will end up using it daily.

A great resource for any shooter!

This is a wonderful book to just sit and read for pleasure as well as being a great reference resource. The history of each cartridge is discussed, as well as the author's personal thoughts on each cartridge. The author is a clear, concise writer without being dull, and the range of cartridges covered is very complete. I have used it often. I am currently reading Peter Hathaway Capstick's book, "Death in the Long Grass", which tells of his African hunting experiences. Capstick mentions several dangerous game cartridges, such as the .375 H&H Magnum and the .470 Nitro Express. I looked both up in this book and read about their histories. One very cool thing about the book is that each cartridge is pictured actual size. These big game cartridges are as big as cigars and go about 300 to 400 grain in weight (compared to one of my favorite cartridges, 30-30 win, which is usually about 150 grain). Included in the book are obsolete cartridges and those fascinating wildcat cartridges, such as the author's own creation, called the "thermos bottle" which must be seen to be believed. If firearm cartridges interest you for any reason you should have this book.

About the Author

Greek Mythology will always have a special part in my heart. I love reading about the Gods and Goddesses. Even in my teens I find topic really interesting. I must say I love Martin Philips' books. I've dowloaded his other greek mythology book and I have to say this one is superb because it contains three stories, the Greek Mythology, the Egyptian Mythology and lastly the Norse Mythology. I really love to know history. I found this book very interesting.I book helped me to know about four different ancient culture.The book is about secrets of Greeks,Egyptians,Vikings and Norse.The writing was interesting and fun to learn about this culture.This book provides a nice foundation to get started in your quest to increase your knowledge of Greek mythology and its myths.A great research done by the author.I was surprised when I go through this book.I would recommend this book to history lover.

Refreshed My Knowledge on Ancient Mythology

This is a great and fascinating guide to have for anyone who wants to find out more or is new to Greek, Egyptian or Norse Mythology. I'm a first year Mediterranean archaeology student and especially the part on Greek Mythology has been very useful to read because it provides a brief but complete overview on these ancient legends. All of us have heard some of these stories while growing up. I had forgotten about many of them so it was great to refresh my knowledge again with this introduction to three compelling cultures, and to expand my knowledge.
This book saved me time and still provided me with the necessary information, so I think it's also perfect for people who find mythology intriguing but don't want to or don't have the time to go through enormous amounts of text, which if often the case with books concerning history. Recommended!

About the Author
Anthony T Selvaggio is a teaching elder in the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America and a member of the Rochester Reformed Presbyterian Church (Rochester, NY) where he contributes regularly to the preaching ministry. He previously served as the Senior Pastor of the College Hill Reformed Presbyterian Church (RPCNA) in Beaver Falls, PA. He is also a visiting professor at the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA. He is an active preacher and conference speaker. He lives in Rochester, New York with his wife, Michelle, and his two children, Katherine and James.

Great Little Book

Anthony T. Selvaggio's book, The Seven Signs, is a small book, but within the 116 pages you will find more meaning than in most books. Selvaggio examines the seven signs found in the first half of the Gospel of John. Selvaggio's purpose in writing this book is the very same reason the Apostle John wrote his Gospel nearly 2000 years ago - he wants the readers to know that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing (they might) have life in His name" (John 20:31). A major component of Jesus' ministry on earth was the performance of signs and wonders. The book consists of nine chapters and four to nine study questions at the end of each chapter. It is a great little book for individual or group studies. It should be noted that the author teaches at a Reformed church and a Reformed seminary, and the publishers distribute books in the Reformed tradition.

Helping to Know God on a Daily Basis

This is volume two of Dr. Carson's attempt to help Christians grow in their relationship with God. In the process the reader's biblical literacy will be raised dramatically. Reading this devotion daily with the four assigned readings, (usually a chapter each in length), you will read the New Testament and Psalms twice and the rest of the Bible once. This was true with volume one as well. Dr. Carson's comments on one of the readings each day will reveal things in Scripture you may have never seen before. He will also give applications to the reader's life from the devotion. This is true as well in volume one. I suggest to the publisher to make volumes one and two a boxed set. It will save the reader another order for a devotion he or she will want after purchasing the first volume. Out of all the devotions I have read, volume two along with its predecessor leads one back to reading the Bible. I highly recommed this volume as well as the first. If your devotional life with God has grown stale, or you want your relationship with God to grow stronger, you could not do better than buying both volumes of Dr. Carson's devotionals

Finest biblical daily devotional on market...

Carson understands that spiritual growth requires more than selecting various texts from around the Bible and applying them to daily personal issues of Christian living, important though that may be. He understands that the Christian believer benefits enormously by seeing how the entire Bible fits together in the flow of salvation-history. Recognizing that linear historical analysis validates the biblical materials is not just an academic exercise, but strengthens faith in the God of the Bible. But, Carson then returns to the issue of application, both at personal and societal levels.
Carson helps Christians to properly interpret OT texts in light of New Covenant fulfillment. He also performs admirably in his notes on passages in the NT pertaining to soteriology. That in itself makes the book worth much more than its purchase price.
I highly recommend these books for any person who wants to grow in her/his understanding and application of the Bible. In addition, these books are of inestimable value for teachers and preachers in that the readings consistently show how to make even rather obscure passages accessible for students and parishoners.

Love of God is an excellent companion/guide to reading through the Bible in a year. Although Amazon does not differentiate, there are 2 versions. This newer tends to have commentary on the Old Testament while the first "For the Love of God" focuses on the New Testament selections.

All who have suffered psychological distress should read this book. It is a message of hope from one who has been there and back. Caroline Fei-Yeng Kwok has had first hand experience with mental illness and has put that experience into beautiful words so that everyone can benefit. She describes her difficult times, her treatments and her mistreatments. She also describes her recovery. Seven dimensions of recovery from mental illnesses have recently been more explicitly delineated (1). The first has to do with independence in decision-making. This was difficult for Fei-Yeng to achieve because she came from a culture that valued submission and co-dependence. Obedience is what her parents expected of her and she yielded, even though she now lived in North America and autonomy is what she secretly yearned for. It led to difficulties in her relationship with her mother and meant that, despite the closeness that had always existed within her family, she had to look elsewhere to establish a network of friends who could provide support she needed the second listed dimension of recovery. She also had to adopt a new social role once she lost her previous three identities, those of a wife, a traditional Chinese woman, a teacher. It was when she assumed her new role as writer that her recovery began. She also worked with a trusted therapist and chose to stay on medication even though wrongful prescription of medication had almost killed her. About the Author
Caroline Fei-Yeng Kwok was born in Hong Kong. After attending Ying Wa Girls School in Hong Kong, she went to study English Literature at the University of Minnesota in 1970. She graduated with Summa Cum Laude and an Honours Award. She then returned to Hong Kong and taught English as a Second Language at the University of Hong Kong before her immigration to Canada in 1974. In 1975, Caroline received her Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto and started teaching with the Toronto District School Board. In 1982, she received her Master of Education from the Ontario Institute For Studies In Education, University of Toronto. In the summer of 1996, she was admitted to the Creative Writing Department at Yale University. Prior to her admission, three of her articles were published in the Toronto Star. In 2001, she attended the Humber School for Writers Summer Program in Toronto. She studied at the New York State Summer Writers Institute in 2004. In 2001, Caroline was the recipient of the 2001 Courage To Come Back Award sponsored by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto. Caroline is a published writer. Her articles have appeared in Psychiatric Services, Cross Currents and Visions Magazine. She is the author of The Tormented Mind. Free to Fly is a non-fiction about her own experience as a Chinese woman afflicted with manic-depression.

Good information

This book helps the reader to understand some of the stigma behind mental illness, particularly bipolar. Bipolar people are special, wonderful, often very creative people who need love and understanding just like other people. If there was more love, understanding, and caring, perhaps there would be less need for medication, which as Ms. Kwok expresses in her book, did not help her. I found the book to be very inspiring.
