Some initial disappointments

I'm a family physician in a small, South-Central rural town. I've owned this reference since the 6th edition and found it extremely useful. I noticed that my 7th edition had nothing on BNP, a hormone elevated in CHF. So I purchased the 8th edition and received it yesterday (it was copyrighted in 2007). There is a massive amount of data in this large paperback but I noticed problems at the start. Maybe I'm being picky, but there were 11 pages of corrections that had to be downloaded from the publisher's web site. This created replacements pages 402 and 403, and new pages 403a-i. There were no corrections to the index for any of these. So, you will need to get out your glue stick and paper cutter and start trimming the printouts. Next, I went to look up BNP. The index says "See Brain-type natriaretic peptide." The only listing for that is for reference values on page 13, which just gives you ranges for normal. But if you look further down in the index, you will see a listing for "B-type natriaretic peptide" that has explanations and uses on pages 129, 131 and 132. So I read them. It says, under "Interpretation" that "BNP and NT-proBNP can be increased in renal failure, especially if dialysis is needed." Okay. Turn the page and under "Not Increased In" is listed "Renal insufficiency." So what is it? Is it increased or decreased in renal insufficiency/failure? Since some degree of renal insufficiency usually accompanies CHF and this can be a life or death blood test, I would think it would be somewhat important to be able to correctly interpret this test result (I have a patient with CHF, a BUN of 100 and he's walking around with a BNP of over 3000 that I can knock down temporarily to 1500 with dobutamine). I wonder what other inconsistencies I will find as I use this reference...

It could be so much better

I own the third edition of this book and as it was getting rather dated and I was studying for a recertification exam, I purchased this one on the strength of the previous edition.

What I found was a more bloated expensive textbook with considerably more difficulty finding out specific information in a timely manner. I found myself referring back to the older edition to find information more quickly. Now some of this bloat is to be expected in medical textbooks, but I found the information fragmented, verbose, poorly organized and annoying enough to use to where I looked elsewhere for my lab values and how they related to specific diseases.

Unlike a previous reviewer, I did not go online to even find out that this book requires major errata and that the indexing would be flawed as well. To have a book on life and death decisions based on lab data with extensive errors? What more needs to be said.

Of the ~ $!k in new medical books I purchased for my review, this one is at the bottom. If I had not written in it and bent a corner, I would return it.

It is in need of MAJOR editorial revision to live up to it's legacy as an intelligible succinct and authoritative source of information regarding lab tests.

This is probably the lowest review I've given to a book I've tried to read or reference. I don't give it one star because obviously a lot of work went into gathering this data and from owning a previous edition, I know the next edition could be capable of meeting my expectations.

As was my 7th edition, this is a must have book. One needs to know what should and should not be ordered, not only for economy's sake, but for the sake of your diagnosis. If you want to home in on what your patient has, use this book to navigate your way.

but others enjoyed the book

This book was a very bizarre collection of poems. It was used in one of my college literature classes. I was not a fan, but others enjoyed the book. Her poems feel "quilted" as many subject and ideas are brought together. I was unable to follow the train of thought, but that doesn't mean others won't be able to.

The David Hunter: Coming to a Theatre Near You!

I was scouring Amazon for the next great action-adventure novel. I thought I'd found it here with "The David Hunter!" Picture it. An abandoned Pacific atoll, owned by a secretive billionaire playboy who has become bored with hunting the standard fauna of the island and now wants to test his primal killing wits against the most dangerous game of all: MAN! ... specifically men named David! So he kidnaps Davids from around the world--possibly, if this were SciFi, from across TIME!--and maroons them all on his private island. Little do they know that food and shelter are the least of their survival worries! Equipped with just a machete and a compass, the recluse owner of the island becomes... THE DAVID HUNTER!! Sounds great, right? Imagine my surprise when I realized that this was just the author's name. Of course, I did learn a lot about fourth and fifth century debates around sexuality, but that's hardly as exciting as this soon-to-be cinematic blockbuster! Someone PLEASE write and then film THE DAVID HUNTER! (PG-13 is ok, but I think we will need an R rating to truly capture my vision.)

A novelist, playwright, and essayist, he is most famous for his novels The Stranger and The Plague. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957.

Absolute horrible version of a great collection

Horrible copy of an awesome collection of essays. This is clearly someone who made the book themselves using Amazon's Createspace book service. First off, the cover is highly pixelated & the Text format inside is horrible. One of the pages stops mid-sentence, mid-page & continues on the next page. Just horrible.

When I got this I thought I'll just get the cheap version cause who cares what the cover looks like as long as the content is there

I guess I got what I paid for, the cover image is low quality and the formatting of the text inside is kind of awkward even though I dont really mind.
What got me was the translation, it's weird and has a lot of typos and its almost like a literal translation, it's unreadable for me. The syntax is off.

A classic work in existentialism

Albert Camus was a French existentialist philosopher of the 20th century who was highly intelligent and wrote some fantastic books in his time.
The Myth of Sisyphus is obviously a classic in philosophical literature and in my opinion this work is one of the most thought provoking books in recent times. The books theme heavily revolves around this quote from Camus:

"There is but only one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy."

Albert Camus contended one must rebel against the logical conclusion on an existential and practical basis. This makes a lot of sense in a universe where philosophical naturalism is presupposed to be true, therefore he was honest that it was impossible to live as if moral nihilism was true. It would mean that one could only accept personal concerns for matters but no longer be able to argue for any rightness or wrongness about any significant matters due to the fact that one could not account for values or meaning beyond one's only subjective account. This is a case where prudential value and moral value come into conflict.

This quote also has much relevance with respect to the book:

"Hence the intelligence...tells me in its way that this world is absurd. Its contrary, blind reason, may well claim that all is clear...But despite so many pretentious centuries and over the heads of so many eloquent and persuasive men, I know that is false"

Absurdity is a topic that is touched upon in this book. Albert Camus goes into this subject of absurdity and speaks about Sisyphus who is known in Greek mythology as someone who lived a life that entailed pointless meaning, as he was subject to endlessly repeating the steps of rolling a boulder up a hill, only to see it roll down again. This essay concludes with statements in respect to the absurdity of man finding his purpose, meaning and unity in life. Albert Camus finishes with what he perceives is the best way to handle this outcome, and that is through `revolt'.

I'm delighted to see this work being published again by the famed Montague Summers and his book "The Were Wolf". A thrilling and rather frighful account of a series of events that took place during the 15th and 18th centuries. Father Montague 188O/1948 an English Priest of the Catholic Church goes into depth about the heart chilling details of "The Were Wolf". How the Were Wolf is not just folk lore, but part of the belief of the Catholic Church, that condemned such monster's attributing there existence to the devil or satan "The Father of Lies" Gospel of (John:8 44). Filled with wisdom and historical accounts the priest gives his thoughts on the mind of the Catholic Church during that time, and her practice of burning such for there wickedness. A great book for them that doubt or deny the existence of "The Were Wolf".
