A unique approach to presenting and closing a sale

If you have ever played a game a catch then you will relate to this book. I was immediately drawn into the baseball analogy. It is an enjoyable and informing read. The day after reading it I tried the technique in a sales presentation. I was more relaxed, was a better listener and I made the sale. The amount of the sale was double what I had anticipated. I highly recommend the book!

The Standard Edition of Dante

I want to explore what makes for a good edition of a classic work such as this. First, of course, is the value of the translation itself. Dr. Esolen's is a superior translation to the others readily available, including that by John Ciardi. I have tried numerous times to read Ciardi's rendering, wanting very much to like it, but in the end I found his rhythm forced and his efforts even at approximate rhyme unsatisfying. Simply put, his lines do not flow. By contrast, Esolen's lines not only flow, but propel the reader onward through the narrative, which is no small feat given the many places throughout the rings of Hell and along the ascent of Mount Purgatory where that attention could stall.

This would be enough to commend the translation, but there is more that makes this Modern Library a superlative edition. His introduction does an extraordinary job of explaining what Purgatory is and is not. In so doing, he has provided an invaluable aid not only to the non-Catholic reader, but likely to the Catholic reader as well, who may not have the best understanding of this wonderful aspect of life after death. Yes, I say it is wonderful based on Esolen's introduction, but I shall leave the reasons for that until another post. For the moment I will conclude by saying that based on his introduction alone, one could not help but marvel at the love of God, desire that love ever more ardently, and see in the gift of Purgatory one more expression of that love.

For such a reasonably priced and slender book, Dr. Esolen manages to include the most helpful appendices and notes. Two appendices contain selections from Aquinas that give insight into Dante's theology. One includes samples of Medieval poetry by poets whom Dante encounters. A fourth appendix includes relevant selections from the Church Fathers on Purgatory, and a fifth presents the full text of various Latin songs and prayers in translation that are sung and prayed by the souls that Dante meets.

Finally, the notes for each canto are all, but only, what a reader needs. To annotate sufficiently the vast number of contemporary references that Dante makes, to say nothing of his ancient allusions, would be a daunting task. Dr. Esolen, however, has provided the reader with just what he needs to make sense of the poem without burdening him with superfluous facts.

As with his Inferno, Dr. Esolen has produced an outstanding edition of Purgatory. In many ways it is like having a university course in Dante in the pages of a book.

Gone to purgatory

Having finished his tour of hell and its residents, Dante Alighieri turns his attention to a more cheerful (if less juicy) supernatural realm. "Purgatory" is less famous than its predecessor, but it's still a beautiful piece of work that explores the mindset not of the damned, but of sinners who are undergoing a divine cleansing -- beautiful, hopeful and a little sad.

Outside of Hell, Dante and Virgil encounter a small boat piloted by an angel and filled with human souls -- and unlike the damned, they're eager to find "the mountain." And as Hell had circles of damnation, Purgatory has terraces that the redeemable souls climb on their way towards Heaven, and none of the people there will leave their terrace until they are cleansed.

And the sins that are cleansed here are the seven deadly ones: the proud, the envious, the wrathful, the greedy, the lazy, the gluttonous, and the lustful. But as Dante moves slowly through the terraces, he finds himself gaining a new tour guide as he approaches Heaven...

I'll say this openly: the second part of the "Divine Comedy" is simply not as deliciously entertaining as "Inferno" -- it was kind of fun to see Dante skewering the corrupt people of his time, and describing the sort of grotesque punishments they merited. But while not as fun, "Purgatory" is a more transcendent, hopeful kind of story since all the souls there will eventually be cleansed and make their way to Heaven.

As a result, "Purgatorio" is filled with a kind of eager anticipation -- there's flowers, stars, dancing, angelic ferrymen, mythic Grecian rivers and an army of souls who are all-too-eager to get to Purgatory so their purification can start. Alighieri's timeless poetry has a silken quality, from beginning to end ("Here rise again to life, oh poetry! Let it o holy Muses...") and it's crammed with classical references and Christian symbolism (the Sun's part in advancing the soiled souls).

And the trip through Purgatory seems to have a strong effect on Dante's self-insert, who appears less repulsed and more fascinated by what he sees there. It's hard not to feel sorry for him when the paternal Virgil exits the Comedy, but at least he has someone else appears to guide him.

The middle part of the Divine Comedy isn't as juicy as "Inferno," but the beauty of Dante Alighieri's writing makes up for it. "Purgatory" is a must read... and then on to Paradise.

About the Author

KEN SCHWABER is a cofounder of the worldwide Agile software movement and cocreator, with Jeff Sutherland, of the "Scrum" technique for building software in 30 days. He is president of Scrum.org, a software consulting firm, and led the process management product revolution of the early 1990s.

JEFF SUTHERLAND is the cocreator of Scrum, and was cosigner of the Agile Manifesto, which marked the start of the Agile movement. He has served as vice president of engineering or CTO at eleven software companies, managing the last seven entirely using Scrum, and achieved industry-leading, hyper-productive results. Jeff is the CEO of Scrum Inc., a consulting and training company.

Over-promises and underdelivers

This is a hard review for me to write. I have a great respect for both of the authors and what they accomplished in the world of software development. I loved Ken's Agile Project Management with Scrum (Microsoft Professional). However, I did not like this book very much. Even considering that I'm not the audience, I do work a fair amount with management in organizations and I wouldn't give them this book. The book felt it was written in a hurry, it had awkward parts in it which most in the Scrum community would probably disagree with and it over-promised, giving me the feeling that Scrum is the silver bullet that magically resolves all problems. That said, it did also have some really good parts, which I'll try to point out also in this review.

The book consists of 2 parts and a bunch of appendixes. The first part is the "why" which explains why traditional waterfall development is not suitable today and how an empirical process is better suited for the job.

The first chapter is a "we are in crisis" chapter. Unfortunately, the only data it quotes is the CHAOS report, which has been challenged a lot of time already. Next to that, it provides some anecdotal cases. It introduces the Stacey diagram, which is great, except that it is significantly changed and Stacey doesn't use it himself anymore.

The second chapter introduces the basics of empirical process and shows how it resolves problems in traditional waterfall development. It also summarizes major points on self-organization and the "new new product development game" article that influenced Scrum strongly. Also the third chapter explains the idea of just starting and getting and inspect-adapt loop going and that way evaluating whether Scrum produces any results. And chapter four explains the art of the possible and why transparency is essential and how Scrum assists with that. Chapter four was pretty good.

Then, part 2. Chapter 5 is a short introduction to Scrum. Interestingly enough, it mentions that the ScrumMaster is 'a manager' which felt a bit odd and simplistic. The rest of the Scrum introduction was extremely short, just mentioning terms but not explaining them deeply.

Chapter 6-8 give examples on how to adopt Scrum. From small project team (chapter 6) to the whole organization (chapter 8). Chapter 6 ought to explain how to start Scrum on a project level, but when looking at the chapter, the first half spends time explaining burn-down charts and the second half is trying to convince the world that 30-day sprints are "the right length". I found this somewhat odd as most of the world seems to recommend against 30-day sprints. It even calculates the overhead for shorter Sprints, but that is than contradicted by the Scrum Guide in appendix A which clearly states that the meetings are proportional to the Sprint length.

Chapter 7 talks about "studio level" adoption, which seems to be a part of an organization. It starts with the suggestion to let everyone sign a contract that they'll use Scrum, which felt odd to me. Then it showed a survey for determining how people are aligned with Scrum assumptions, which was pretty good. Then it shows a "dashboard" of metrics for management to use which to me felt a bit simplistic (I know Ken is doing more work on this at the moment, and hope it will improve). It then calls velocity a measure of productivity (which can be quite dangerous) and suggests it to be measured in function points. I'm personally not aware of many Scrum projects that actually use function points, so I felt the mentioning of that was a bit odd. The end of the chapter related to technical dept was quite good again!

Chapter 8 about adopting Scrum to the enterprise was 3 pages. Chapter 9 are the steps of a change project. This mostly is a summary of Kotter's change management ideas. Chapter 10 explains the concept of using Scrum to adopt Scrum, which is a summary of Ken's Enterprise Scrum book.

Appendix 1 is terminology. Appendix 2 is the excellent Scrum Guide, which you can also find online. Appendix 3 is a play-book for adopting Scrum developed by Rally, which didn't seem to have changes much since 2005.

All in all, the book had its good moments followed up by moments that made my head shake. The tone of the book was quite selling, which annoyed me a bit at times. The explanations of Scrum felt mostly shallow and then deep on surprising moments (3 pages on why the Sprint length should be 30 days, about as much as about adoption of Scrum to the enterprise). In general, the book didn't feel like one whole and felt like it was put together in a hurry. I had thought about giving it 3 stars, but think that would be too much as I wouldn't recommend reading this book. If you want a better introduction to Scrum by the same author, pick up the somewhat dated Agile Project Management with Scrum (Microsoft Professional) or just download the Scrum Guide (or alternatives).

I had expected more from two respected and influential people in our industry.

Finally, a book to enlighten managers

I've read a lot of books on Scrum. Most focus on the framework. Some focus on how to make it work efficiently. Some talk about how to make it scale in complex environments. A few will contain an obligatory chapter or two on introducing Scrum and its capabilities. I've yet to find a book that provides the complete, compelling story on why to adopt Scrum ... until now.

Ken and Jeff's latest book nails it. It starts off with a very real case study involving the FBI and their wasting of millions of dollars in failed software development efforts. The authors then present the why and the how the management team chose and adopted Scrum, getting the product to code complete.

After reading the book, any intellectually honest manager will see the value of empiricism and be crazy not to put Scrum to work on their next or current project.

Concise, targeted and perfect for senior management

If you're a manager then you probably don't have that much spare time on your hands so you'll be pleased to know that this is a short, concise read. While you don't need to understand the intricacies of software development, you do need to have experienced frustration with the results; that the cost of getting software developed doesn't stack up to the return you get from it , that the quality produced is inexplicably poor and sometimes the functionality misses the mark completely.

If you're in just such a situation then this book is perfect for you. Software in 30 Days explains the root causes of your problems and ways to address those problems. It also includes practical steps on how to transition your organisation's approach to software development so that you can end the pain and start getting genuine value from your software development efforts.

Watchmen of Rome Alex Gough

Ahh, the sights and pungent smells of The Subura, a lovely place for the setting of this engaging story. Carbo has returned home to Rome after 25 years in the Legions from which he retired as a Pilus Prior Centurion and who survived the Teutoburg Forest disaster. All he is looking for is to reunite with his aged mother and to begin a relaxing life as a civilian, none of which is in his immediate future. From the get go the author takes the reader on an adventurous ride as Carbo faces one challenge after another. A neighborhood protection gang, a runaway slave and her daughter who Carbo had sworn an oath to protect years ago, a fanatical priestess of the old Carthaginian gods who has plans to destroy Rome using the slave’s daughter as human sacrifice and a relentless, ruthless fugitive slave hunter…suffice to say that the author has given us tale filled with action as well as a tale filled with emotional strain and anguish. The characters are well developed and are such that you feel what they feel; this is also evident in the descriptions of the stew that was the Subura, you can envision the dense crowds, the noise of hawking vendors, the smell of the detritus of chamberpots, the reality of the daily lives of the poor. That is another of the reasons I enjoyed this novel, the characters are the ordinary, the lowborn, the freedmen and the slaves not the high and mighty. Tiberius and Sejanus while they are mentioned are there only to give the sense of time and atmosphere.

As this book was recommended to me, so to do I recommend it to you. A solid 5 stars.

Solid read

I've read dozens of books about the legions.It's nice break to get out the wilderness and into a civilized city...(If you can call rome that)... ever wonder what a retired pilus prior does after his 20-25 years? Read this an find out what kind of trouble a retired legionary can get himself into. There's action. As well as the author threw in a very welcome twist. Ptsd... or shell shocked. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it .. enjoy!!!!!

Keepin' it in the slums.

I quite enjoyed "Watchmen Of Rome". It was a refreshing change from the normal style Roman novel's on Expansion, Emperors, or Gladiators that all have plenty of books to be had. Now, however I do love all those reading subjects, it was just nice to read a novel that was about the underprivileged, and the gritty, rough lifestyle of living in the slums of Rome. Alex Gough did a heck of a job for a debut novel. Alex's writing is top notch. His story telling skills are professional. And his character building is masterful. I enjoyed my time in the seedy side of the city. And I look forward to the sequel.

Newest Edition Has Recipes, Convenience--and a Wine Guide

Tons of Lore and Just as Much Convenience

By Bill Marsano. There are more than enough bar guides around to satisfy even the thirstiest soul, so the question becomes which one is the most helpful, the easiest to use. Well, this one has a pretty fair claim to the title.

At about 4.5 inches by 9, it is of convenient, under-bar size (no bartender wants the customer to know he has to look anything up). It has some 2,700 recipes, and it takes them all with a straight face, from the utterly genteel to the impossibly vulgar (in my view, anyone who orders a German Leg-Spreader or a Duck Fart is a lout who should be flung into the street at the earliest opportunity, but that's the bouncer's job). There's an enlarged section on the martini, that greatest of cocktails, that Fred Astaire of drinks; and sections on flavored vodkas, shooters, floaters and wines. The wine section is especially worthy of note. Bartenders used to take the approach of Tim Costello's old Manhattan saloon, which had its wine list painted on the wall. It said: "Red, $2.50. White, $2.50. No substitutions." But times are changing and with any number of places offering wine by the glass, the able bartender has to know more than how to use a corkscrew. In this book, the wine advice comes from that demigod, Robert Parker Jr. himself. Nuff said.

But the best thing about this book is that it has a comb binding--something like a spiral-wire binding, but made of plastic. It means this book, unlike all the others I've see lately, lies FLAT. No more bending the book open, flexing it until the binding cracks, and then weighting it with a beer bottle to keep the thing from flapping closed. Sometimes strokes of genius are as easy as they are rare.--Bill Marsano is an award-winning writer and editor.'

Best book on market! Most up to date!

You will probably discard any other books you have previously purchased. The author/bartender obviously knows his stuff.

This book is not by a wannabe or a corporate monkey. It's great that this book does not push brands and is unbiased. The book lays open flat, and the recipes are easy to follow.

I once had a book with twice the recipes but they were 98% bad recipes. I threw that book out.

There is a wine section written by Robert Parker, that has helped me immensely picking out bottles of wine. Other things that make this book stand out are the Martini instructions, Dessert Drink Section, Hot Drink Section, Frozen Drink Section. Glossary of Bartending Lingo.

A ton of drinks but the only problem is that it doesn't list the glassware that will be used for the drink. Other than that, all the information that anyone would ever need for bartending.

I have no real experience but have been researching home distilling through multiple books. If you are in that category, this is the book for you. I feel I could use this book and a couple youTube videos and make my first run fine. I particularly like the advice in the build-or-buy chapter. This is the 3rd book I've gotten on the topic and this one is the best for me.
