Theory and Computation of Electromagnetic Fields, by Jian-Ming Jin

This book is intended to serve as a textbook for an entry level graduate course on electromagnetics (first seven chapters) and for an advanced level graduate course on computational electromagnetics (last five chapters). Whereas there are several textbooks available for the graduate electromagnetics course, no textbook is available for the advanced course on computational electromagnetics. This book is intended to fill this void and present electromagnetic theory in a systematic manner so that students can advance from the first course to the second without much difficulty. Even though the first part of the book covers the standard basic electromagnetic theory, the coverage is different from that in existing textbooks. This is mainly the result of the undergraduate curriculum reform that occurred during the past two decades. Many universities reduced the number of required courses in order to give students more freedom to design their own portfolio. As a result, only one electromagnetics course is required for undergraduate students in most electrical engineering departments in the country. New graduate students come to take the graduate electromagnetics course with a significant difference in their knowledge of basic electromagnetic theory. To meet the challenge to benefit all students of backgrounds, this book covers both fundamental theories, such as vector analysis, Maxwell's equations and boundary conditions, and transmission line theory, and advanced topics, such as wave transformation, addition theorems, and scattering by a layered sphere.

Review
"To meet the challenge to benefit all students of backgrounds, this book covers both fundamental theories, such as vector analysis, Maxwell's equations and boundary conditions, and transmission line theory, and advanced topics, such as wave transformation, addition theorems, and scattering by a layered sphere." (News Blaze, 8 March 2011)

From the Back Cover
A unique textbook for both entry- and advanced-level graduate coursework

Theory and Computation of Electromagnetic Fields doubles as a textbook for both an entry-level graduate course on electromagnetics and an advanced-level graduate course on computational electromagnetics. It presents the fundamental concepts in a systematic manner so that students can advance from the first course to the second with little difficulty.

The book consists of two parts. Part I covers the standard basic electromagnetic theory in a different manner than most texts; the contents cover both fundamental theories (such as vector analysis, Maxwell's equations and boundary conditions, and transmission line theory) and advanced topics (such as wave transformation, addition theorems, and fields in layered media) in order to benefit students at all levels. Part II covers major computational methods for numerical analysis of electromagnetic fields for engineering applications. These methods include the finite difference method (and the finite difference time-domain method in particular), the finite element method, and the integral-equation-based moment method.

Additional benefits of Theory and Computation of Electromagnetic Fields include:

  • Maxwell's equations as the starting point for the treatment of every subject

  • Added coverage of fast algorithms for solving integral equations and hybrid techniques for combining different numerical methods to seek more efficient solutions to complicated electromagnetic problems

  • Material designed for classroom teaching and self-learning in two semesters, and tested over fifteen years at the University of Illinois

  • Homework problems in every chapter to test and reinforce understanding of course material

  • Accompanying Instructor's Guide

Theory and Computation of Electromagnetic Fields serves as a textbook for entry- and advanced-level graduate electrical engineering students. It is also an ideal reference for professional engineers who wish to brush up on their analysis and computation skills.

Good book
By Srikumar Sandeep
After studying and working on this book for few months, I have to say this is a very good book. The first section (theoretical part) is of the same level as Balanis' Advanced electromagnetic theory. The second section is introductory computational electromagnetics (of the same level as books by Sadiku, R. Garg etc). This is not a book, which you can "read through". I mean it is not a cook book for signal integrity or computer engineers (that is not the purpose of the book). You need solid background and some maturity in vector calculus and undergraduate electromagnetics. And most importantly the patience and perseverance to work through the derivations yourself in your notebook. This book is a stepping stone to more specialized books such as Taflove's FDTD book or Jin's FEM book. Nice color pictures of simulation outputs are included. I hope in the next edition of this book, the author include more detail on novel methods like Discontinuous Galerkin, Multiscale methods, Uncertainty analysis etc.

Theory and Computation of Electromagnetic Fields
By MEDFBUDDY
This is a well-written book that should be useful to both graduate students in physics, mathematics, and electrical engineering, and experienced practitioners in those fields. The first section of the book is logically organized from chapter to chapter, while the chapters of the second section are sufficiently independent to suit the needs of various computational researchers; of course, a thorough background and working facility with vector analysis and partial differential equations is necessary; this is not a book to read while strolling in central park or listening to iPod music; you will need pencil and paper, and a PC with V12 horse-power to navigate the pages of the second section of this book!

LOVE this book!!!
By An EM specialist
LOVE this book!!! A perfect textbook for students in studying electromagnetics, and an indispensable reference for anyone interested in electromagnetic theory and computational methods. It is great to have both electromagnetic theory and computational techniques in one book because they are very important and so closely connected. Part I thoroughly covers every aspect of important electromagnetic theories; Part II is about computational techniques for electromagnetic field, and covers all the major computational methods in electromagnetics. This book has both introductory contents and in-depth materials and discussions, and therefore suitable for both entry-level and experienced readers. Its contents are arranged very well and guide you step-by-step to understand the big picture and technical detail. Those who wants to know/practice more can refer to the nicely-compiled reference list and problems at the end of each chapter.
